Zusammenfassung: | "The exploding cost of health care in the United States is a source of widespread alarm. Similarly, the upward spiral of college tuition fees is cause for serious concern. In this concise and illuminating book, well-known economist William J. Baumol explores the causes of these seemingly intractable problems and offers a surprisingly simple explanation. Baumol identifies the "cost disease" as a major source of rapidly rising costs in service sectors of the economy. Once we understand that disease, he explains, effective responses become apparent. Baumol presents his analysis with characteristic clarity, tracing the fast-rising prices of health care and education in the U.S. and other major industrial nations, then examining the underlying causes of the phenomenon, which have to do with the nature of providing labor-intensive services. The news is good, Baumol reassures, because the nature of the disease is such that society will be able to afford the rising costs."--Publisher's description. |

The news is good, Baumol reassures, because the nature of the disease is such that society will be able to afford the rising costs."--Publisher's description.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on Sept. 26, 2012).</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Prices</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Medical care</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">Costs.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Medical economics.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85082915</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Medical care, Cost of.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85082888</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Fees and Charges</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Economics, Medical</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Health Care Costs</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Universities</subfield><subfield code="x">economics</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Prix</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Économie de la santé.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Soins médicaux</subfield><subfield code="x">Coût.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Economics</subfield><subfield code="x">Microeconomics.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Economic Conditions.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Medical economics</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Medical care, Cost of</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Prices</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The cost disease (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFPCmY6Rv6rMFGcyDfJkXd</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Baumol, William J.</subfield><subfield code="t">Cost disease.</subfield><subfield code="d">New Haven : Yale University Press, [2012]</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2012938269</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=490944</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Coutts Information Services</subfield><subfield code="b">COUT</subfield><subfield code="n">24021515</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">De Gruyter</subfield><subfield code="b">DEGR</subfield><subfield code="n">9780300188486</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - "The exploding cost of health care in the United States is a source of widespread alarm.
