Zusammenfassung: | Afroasiatic languages are spoken by some 300 million people in Northern, Central and Eastern Africa and the Middle East. This book is the first typological study of these languages, which are comprised of around 375 living and extinct varieties. They are an important object of study because of their typological diversity in the areas of phonology (some have tone; others do not), morphology (some have extensive inflectional systems; others do not), position of the verb in the clause (some are verb-initial, some are verb-medial, and some are verb-final) and in the semantic functions they encode. This book documents this typological diversity and the typological similarities across the languages and includes information on endangered and little-known languages. Requiring no previous knowledge of the specific language families, it will be welcomed by linguists interested in linguistic theory, typology, historical linguistics and endangered languages, as well as scholars of Africa and the Middle East. |

Requiring no previous knowledge of the specific language families, it will be welcomed by linguists interested in linguistic theory, typology, historical linguistics and endangered languages, as well as scholars of Africa and the Middle East.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="505" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="g">1.</subfield><subfield code="t">Introduction /</subfield><subfield code="r">Zygmunt Frajzyngier and Erin Shay --</subfield><subfield code="g">2.</subfield><subfield code="t">Berber /</subfield><subfield code="r">Maarten Kossmann --</subfield><subfield code="g">3.</subfield><subfield code="t">Ancient Egyptian and Coptic /</subfield><subfield code="r">Antonio Loprieno and Matthias Müller --</subfield><subfield code="g">4.</subfield><subfield code="t">Semitic /</subfield><subfield code="r">Gene Gregg and Robert Hoberman --</subfield><subfield code="g">5.</subfield><subfield code="t">Chadic /</subfield><subfield code="r">Zygmunt Frajzyngier and Erin Shay --</subfield><subfield code="g">6.</subfield><subfield code="t">Cushitic /</subfield><subfield code="r">Maarten Mous --</subfield><subfield code="g">7.</subfield><subfield code="t">Omotic /</subfield><subfield code="r">Azeb Amha --</subfield><subfield code="g">8.</subfield><subfield code="t">Typological outline of the Afroasiatic phylum /</subfield><subfield code="r">Zygmunt Frajzyngier.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Afroasiatic languages.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85002020</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Langues chamito-sémitiques.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">FOREIGN LANGUAGE STUDY</subfield><subfield code="x">Arabic.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Afroasiatic languages</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Hamitosemitische Sprachen</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4110088-8</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Electronic book.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Frajzyngier, Zygmunt.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n85061324</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Shay, Erin.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2001037692</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The Afroasiatic languages (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGqBmpfBBKm6WytGBg6WQq</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="t">Afroasiatic languages.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge ; spelling | The Afroasiatic languages / edited by Zygmunt Frajzyngier, Erin Shay. Cambridge ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2012. 1 online resource text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource cr rdacarrier data file Cambridge language surveys Includes bibliographical references and index. Afroasiatic languages are spoken by some 300 million people in Northern, Central and Eastern Africa and the Middle East.
