Zusammenfassung: | In developing countries, concerns about declining fertility rates are matched only by fears that childhood is being destroyed by modern parenting practices. This timely volume brings together scholars from multiple disciplines to provide a more balanced, less alarmist perspective on the meanings and implications of these developments. Contrary to predictions about the end of children and the end of childhood, these investigations of developments in Canada and the United States, and to a lesser extent elsewhere in the world, show that fertility rates and ideas about children and childhood are not uniform but rather vary around the globe based on factors such as time, culture, class, income, and age. By exploring the influences that inform when and why people have children and how they choose to raise them, The End of Children? opens a new dialogue on the idea and place of children in modern society. |

By exploring the influences that inform when and why people have children and how they choose to raise them, The End of Children? opens a new dialogue on the idea and place of children in modern society.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Children</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">20th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Child development</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">20th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Human reproduction</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">20th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Children.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85023418</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Child development.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85023357</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Human reproduction.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85062887</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Child Development</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D002657</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Reproduction</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D012098</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Enfance</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">20e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Enfants</subfield><subfield code="x">Développement</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">20e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Reproduction humaine</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">20e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Enfance.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Enfants</subfield><subfield code="x">Développement.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Reproduction humaine.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">childhood.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Children's Studies.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Child development</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Children</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Human reproduction</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">1900-1999</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Allan, Graham,</subfield><subfield code="d">1948-</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCjF3GcHyJPfjpRb7dkD7Dy</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n00096715</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Lauster, Nathanael Thomas,</subfield><subfield code="d">1972-</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCjJRp76dQwGkmcxpcQygYX</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no99090022</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The end of children? Miller -- The disappearance of parents from children's lives : the cummulative effects of child care, child custody, and child welfare policies in Canada / Edward Kruk -- Navigating the pedagogy of failure : medicine, education, and the disabled child in English Canada, 1900-45 / Mona Gleason -- Pathologizing childhood / Anita Ilta Garey -- From children to child : ending in China / Jing Zhao, Nathanael Lauster, and Graham Allan. In developing countries, concerns about declining fertility rates are matched only by fears that childhood is being destroyed by modern parenting practices.
