Zusammenfassung: | Brian Ellis's new book develops the metaphysics of scientific realism to the point where it begins to take on the characteristics of a first philosophy. As most people understand it, scientific realism is not yet such a theory. It is not sufficiently general, and has no plausible applications in fields other than the well-established sciences. Nevertheless, Ellis demonstrates that the original arguments that led to scientific realism may be deployed more widely than they originally were to fill out a more complete picture of what there is. Realistic theories of quantum mechanics, time, causality and human freedom can all be developed satisfactorily, and moral theory can be recast to fit within this comprehensive metaphysical framework. The resulting moral theory, which turns out to be a form of "social contractual" utilitarianism, is a significant addition to the literature and is shown to be more defensible than other forms of utilitarianism. |

The resulting moral theory, which turns out to be a form of "social contractual" utilitarianism, is a significant addition to the literature and is shown to be more defensible than other forms of utilitarianism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="505" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Cover; Half Title; Title Page; Copyright Page; Dedication; Table of Contents; Preface; Introduction; 1 Science and metaphysics; 2 The ontology of scientific realism; 3 Essentialist realism; 4 Quantum mechanical realism; 5 Causal powers and categorical dimensions; 6 Realism as first philosophy; 7 Realism in ethics; Bibliography; Index</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Realism.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85111767</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Science</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophy.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85118582</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Metaphysics.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85084286</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">First philosophy.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85048597</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Réalisme.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Métaphysique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">metaphysics.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophy & Social Aspects.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">First philosophy</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Metaphysics</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Realism</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Science</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophy</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The metaphysics of scientific realism (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFPJFD8h38c7Jk63bqYqXq</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="z">1-84465-205-X</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="z">1-84465-206-8</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=924288</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">eLibro</subfield><subfield code="b">ELBO</subfield><subfield code="n">ELB136220</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH27270948</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH27270918</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10553863</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">924288</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">7620089</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

Durham : Acumen, 2009. 1 online resource (xi, 179 pages) : illustrations text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource cr rdacarrier Includes bibliographical references and index. Brian Ellis's new book develops the metaphysics of scientific realism to the point where it begins to take on the characteristics of a first philosophy.
