Zusammenfassung: | History is not just about great personalities, wars, and revolutions; it is also about the subtle aspects of more ordinary matters. On a day-to-day basis the aspects of life that most preoccupied people in late eighteenth- through mid nineteenth-century Mexico were not the political machinations of generals or politicians but whether they themselves could make a living, whether others accorded them the respect they deserved, whether they were safe from an abusive husband, whether their wives and children would obey them--in short, the minutiae of daily life. Sonya Lipsett-Rivera's Gender and the Negotiation of Daily Life in Mexico, 1750-1856 explores the relationships between Mexicans, their environment, and one another, as well as their negotiation of the cultural values of everyday life. By examining the value systems that governed Mexican thinking of the period, Lipsett-Rivera examines the ephemeral daily experiences and interactions of the people and illuminates how gender and honor systems governed these quotidian negotiations. Bodies and the built environment were inscribed with cultural values, and the relationship of Mexicans to and between space and bodies determined the way ordinary people acted out their culture. |

Bodies and the built environment were inscribed with cultural values, and the relationship of Mexicans to and between space and bodies determined the way ordinary people acted out their culture.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Mexico</subfield><subfield code="x">Civilization</subfield><subfield code="y">18th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Mexico</subfield><subfield code="x">Civilization</subfield><subfield code="y">19th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Mexico</subfield><subfield code="x">Social life and customs</subfield><subfield code="y">18th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Mexico</subfield><subfield code="x">Social life and customs</subfield><subfield code="y">19th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Mexico</subfield><subfield code="x">Social conditions</subfield><subfield code="y">18th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Mexico</subfield><subfield code="x">Social conditions</subfield><subfield code="y">19th century.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh88007837</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Sex role</subfield><subfield code="z">Mexico.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Space</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects</subfield><subfield code="z">Mexico.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Human body</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects</subfield><subfield code="z">Mexico.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Mexique</subfield><subfield code="x">Civilisation</subfield><subfield code="y">18e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Mexique</subfield><subfield code="x">Civilisation</subfield><subfield code="y">19e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Mexique</subfield><subfield code="x">Conditions sociales</subfield><subfield code="y">18e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Mexique</subfield><subfield code="x">Conditions sociales</subfield><subfield code="y">19e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Rôle selon le sexe</subfield><subfield code="z">Mexique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Espace</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect social</subfield><subfield code="z">Mexique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Corps humain</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect social</subfield><subfield code="z">Mexique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HISTORY</subfield><subfield code="z">Latin America</subfield><subfield code="z">Mexico.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Gender Studies.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Civilization</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Human body</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Manners and customs</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Sex role</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Social conditions</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Mexico</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39QbtfRkxCrqQ3XXbCkdP63kc</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Mexico.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">1700 - Negotiating daily life -- Space and Mexican society -- Behind closed doors -- Beyond the door -- The body in daily life -- The head, honor, and aggression -- Power, sex, hair, and clothes -- Culture, honor, and gender in Mexico. Print version record. History is not just about great personalities, wars, and revolutions; it is also about the subtle aspects of more ordinary matters.
