Zusammenfassung: | Although it has been in existence for over three decades, the Internet remains a contested technology. Its governance and role in civic life, education, and entertainment are all still openly disputed and debated. The issues include censorship and network control, privacy and surveillance, the political impact of activist blogging, peer to peer file sharing, the effects of video games on children, and many others. Media conglomerates, governments and users all contribute to shaping the forms and functions of the Internet as the limits and potentialities of the technologies are tested and extended. What is most surprising about the Internet is the proliferation of controversies and conflicts in which the creativity of ordinary users plays a central role. The title, (Re)Inventing the Internet, refers to this extraordinary flowering of agency in a society that tends to reduce its members to passive spectators. This collection presents a series of critical case studies that examine specific sites of change and contestation. These cover a range of phenomena including computer gaming cultures, online education, surveillance, and the mutual shaping of digital technologies and civic life. |

This collection presents a series of critical case studies that examine specific sites of change and contestation. These cover a range of phenomena including computer gaming cultures, online education, surveillance, and the mutual shaping of digital technologies and civic life.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Internet</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects</subfield><subfield code="v">Case studies.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Web-based instruction</subfield><subfield code="v">Case studies.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Internet</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect social</subfield><subfield code="v">Études de cas.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">COMPUTERS</subfield><subfield code="x">Data Transmission Systems</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">COMPUTERS</subfield><subfield code="x">Networking</subfield><subfield code="x">Vendor Specific.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Education.</subfield><subfield code="2">eclas</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Sciences sociales.</subfield><subfield code="2">eclas</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Sciences humaines.</subfield><subfield code="2">eclas</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Internet</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Web-based instruction</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Education.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Case studies</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Case studies.</subfield><subfield code="2">lcgft</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms/gf2017026140</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Études de cas.</subfield><subfield code="2">rvmgf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Feenberg, Andrew.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80116610</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Friesen, Norm.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2008070420</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="z">946091733X</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="z">9460917321</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=478119</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Coutts Information Services</subfield><subfield code="b">COUT</subfield><subfield code="n">22794893</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">478119</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">7598816</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

Rotterdam ; Boston : SensePublishers, ©2012. 1 online resource (x, 135 pages) text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource cr rdacarrier data file Includes bibliographical references. I. Code and Communication / Introduction / Toward a Critical Theory of the Internet / Andrew Feenberg -- II. Play and School Online / Rationalizing play / A Critical Theory of Digital Gaming / M. Grimes and Andrew Feenberg -- Alternative Rationalisations and Ambivalent Futures / A Critical History of Online Education / Edward Hamiltonss and Andrew Feenberg -- III. Although it has been in existence for over three decades, the Internet remains a contested technology.
