Zusammenfassung: | Canada and the Idea of North examines the ways in which Canadians have defined themselves as a northern people in their literature, art, music, drama, history, geography, politics, and popular culture. From the Franklin Mystery to the comic book superheroine Nelvana, Glenn Gould's documentaries, the paintings of Lawren Harris, and Molson beer ads, the idea of the north has been central to the Canadian imagination. Sherrill Grace argues that Canadians have always used ideas of Canada-as-North to promote a distinct national identity and national unity. In a penultimate chapter - "The North Writes Back" - Grace presents newly emerging northern voices and shows how they view the long tradition of representing the North by southern activists, artists, and scholars. With the recent creation of Nunavut, increasing concern about northern ecosystems and social challenges, and renewed attention to Canada's role as a circumpolar nation, Canada and the Idea of North shows that nordicity still plays an urgent and central role in Canada at the start of the twenty-first century. |

the ways in which Canadians have defined themselves as a northern people in their literature, art, music, drama, history, geography, politics, and popular culture. With the recent creation of Nunavut, increasing concern about northern ecosystems and social challenges, and renewed attention to Canada's role as a circumpolar nation, Canada and the Idea of North shows that nordicity still plays an urgent and central role in Canada at the start of the twenty-first century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Arts</subfield><subfield code="z">Canada.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Nationalism</subfield><subfield code="z">Canada.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Canada, Northern.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85019363</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Canada (Nord) dans la littérature.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Canada (Nord) dans l'art.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Canadiens.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Canada (Nord)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Arts</subfield><subfield code="z">Canada.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Nationalisme</subfield><subfield code="z">Canada.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">ART</subfield><subfield code="x">Performance.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">ART</subfield><subfield code="x">Reference.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HISTORY</subfield><subfield code="z">Canada</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Arts</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Nationalism</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Northern Canada</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Canada</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJkMHVW4rfVXPrhVP4VwG3</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Het Noorden.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Culturele identiteit.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Canada (Nord) dans la litťrature.</subfield><subfield code="2">rvm</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Canada and the idea of north (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFPr3J7hCKQyqvTvDhYJQq</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Grace, Sherrill, 1944-</subfield><subfield code="t">Canada and the idea of North.</subfield><subfield code="d">Montréal : London : McGill-Queen's University Press, 2002</subfield><subfield code="z">0773522476</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)59449432</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=403840</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">De Gruyter</subfield><subfield code="b">DEGR</subfield><subfield code="n">9780773569539</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Internet Archive</subfield><subfield code="b">INAR</subfield><subfield code="n">canadaideaofnort0000grac_g8w2</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Internet Archive</subfield><subfield code="b">INAR</subfield><subfield code="n">canadaideaofnort0000grac</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Canadian Electronic Library</subfield><subfield code="b">CELB</subfield><subfield code="n">10119952</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL -
