Zusammenfassung: | "This deeply informed biography of Walther Rathenau (1867-1922) tells of a man who--both thoroughly German and unabashedly Jewish--rose to leadership in the German War-Ministry Department during the First World War, and later to the exalted position of foreign minister in the early days of the Weimar Republic. His achievement was unprecedented--no Jew in Germany had ever attained such high political rank. But Rathenau's success was marked by tragedy: within months he was assassinated by right-wing extremists seeking to destroy the newly formed Republic. Drawing on Rathenau's papers and on a depth of knowledge of both modern German and German-Jewish history, Shulamit Volkov creates a finely drawn portrait of this complex man who struggled with his Jewish identity yet treasured his "otherness." Volkov also places Rathenau in the dual context of Imperial and Weimar Germany and of Berlin's financial and intellectual elite. Above all, she illuminates the complex social and psychological milieu of German Jewry in the period before Hitler's rise to power."--Dust jacket flap |

Above all, she illuminates the complex social and psychological milieu of German Jewry in the period before Hitler's rise to power."--Dust jacket flap</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Rathenau, Walther,</subfield><subfield code="d">1867-1922.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79084127</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Rathenau, Walther,</subfield><subfield code="d">1867-1922</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJfH4pwTxvXjVgR3Mc7T73</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Germany</subfield><subfield code="x">Politics and government</subfield><subfield code="y">1918-1933.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85054639</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Statesmen</subfield><subfield code="z">Germany</subfield><subfield code="v">Biography.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Jews</subfield><subfield code="z">Germany</subfield><subfield code="v">Biography.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Allemagne</subfield><subfield code="x">Politique et gouvernement</subfield><subfield code="y">1918-1933.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Hommes d'État</subfield><subfield code="z">Allemagne</subfield><subfield code="v">Biographies.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Juifs</subfield><subfield code="z">Allemagne</subfield><subfield code="v">Biographies.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY</subfield><subfield code="x">Historical.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HISTORY</subfield><subfield code="z">Europe</subfield><subfield code="z">Germany.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY</subfield><subfield code="x">Political.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Jews</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Politics and government</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Statesmen</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Germany</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtCD3rcKcPDx6FHmjvrbd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">1918-1933</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">collective biographies.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Biographies</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Biographies.</subfield><subfield code="2">lcgft</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms/gf2014026049</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Biographies.</subfield><subfield code="2">rvmgf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Volkov, Shulamit, 1942-</subfield><subfield code="t">Walther Rathenau.</subfield><subfield code="d">New Haven : Yale University Press, ©2012</subfield><subfield code="z">9780300144314</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2011033169</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)711045562</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Jewish lives (New Haven, Conn.)</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2010171352</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=430447</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Coutts Information Services</subfield><subfield code="b">COUT</subfield><subfield code="n">20635740</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - A German Jew in the making -- A man of many talents -- Incursions into politics -- Captain of industry, literary star, lonely man -- Hitting the glass ceiling -- Politician manqué, prophet with a vengeance -- Fulfillment and catastrophe. Print version record. "This deeply informed biography of Walther Rathenau (1867-1922) tells of a man who--both thoroughly German and unabashedly Jewish--rose to leadership in the German War-Ministry Department during the First World War, and later to the exalted position of foreign minister in the early days of the Weimar Republic. Above all, she illuminates the complex social and psychological milieu of German Jewry in the period before Hitler's rise to power."--Dust jacket flap Rathenau, Walther, 1867-1922. http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79084127 Rathenau, Walther, 1867-1922 fast https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJfH4pwTxvXjVgR3Mc7T73 Germany Politics and government 1918-1933. http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85054639 Statesmen Germany Biography.
