Zusammenfassung: | "First published in 1829, Walker's Appeal called on slaves to rise up and free themselves. The two subsequent versions of his document (including the reprinted 1830 edition published shortly before Walker's death) were increasingly radical. Addressed to the whole world but directed primarily to people of color around the world, the 87-page pamphlet by a free black man born in North Carolina and living in Boston advocates immediate emancipation and slave rebellion. Walker asks the slaves among his readers whether they wouldn't prefer to "be killed than to be a slave to a tyrant." He advises them not to "trifle" if they do rise up, but rather to kill those who would continue to enslave them and their wives and children. Copies of the pamphlet were smuggled by ship in 1830 from Boston to Wilmington, North Carolina, Walker's childhood home, causing panic among whites. In 1830, members of North Carolina's General Assembly had the Appeal in mind as they tightened the state's laws dealing with slaves and free black citizens. The resulting stricter laws led to more policies that repressed African Americans, freed and slave alike"--Publisher's description. |

The resulting stricter laws led to more policies that repressed African Americans, freed and slave alike"--Publisher's description.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Description based on online resource; title from electronic title page (JSTOR, viewed on December 9, 2020).</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Slavery</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85123326</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Slavery</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">Social conditions.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Esclavage</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Esclavage</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis</subfield><subfield code="x">Conditions sociales.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Ethnic Studies</subfield><subfield code="x">African American Studies.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Slavery</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Slavery</subfield><subfield code="x">Social conditions</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="i">Electronic reproduction of (manifestation):</subfield><subfield code="a">Walker, David,</subfield><subfield code="d">1785-1830.</subfield><subfield code="t">Walker's appeal, in four articles.</subfield><subfield code="s">3rd and last edition.</subfield><subfield code="f">1830.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="710" ind1="2" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.</subfield><subfield code="b">Documenting the American South (Project)</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no96056901</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="710" ind1="2" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.</subfield><subfield code="b">Library.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n80120860</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Walker, David, 1785-1830.</subfield><subfield code="t">Walker's appeal in four articles.</subfield><subfield code="b">3rd and last ed.</subfield><subfield code="d">Boston : D. Boston : Revised and published by David Walker, 1830. Prepared using the transcribed electronic text used in the "Documenting the American South" (DocSouth)--Project. Includes bibliographical references. Preamble -- Article I. Our wretchedness in consequence of slavery -- Article II. Our wretchedness in consequence of ignorance -- Article III. Our wretchedness in consequence of the preachers of the religion of Jesus Christ -- Article IV. Our wretchedness in consequence of the colonizing plan -- A declaration made July 4, 1776 -- Part II. "First published in 1829, Walker's Appeal called on slaves to rise up and free themselves.
