Zusammenfassung: | An investigation of what makes digital games engaging to players and a reexamination of the concept of immersion. Digital games offer a vast range of engaging experiences, from the serene exploration of beautifully rendered landscapes to the deeply cognitive challenges presented by strategic simulations to the adrenaline rush of competitive team-based shoot-outs. Digital games enable experiences that are considerably different from a reader's engagement with literature or a moviegoer's experience of a movie. In In-Game, Gordon Calleja examines what exactly it is that makes digital games so uniquely involving and offers a new, more precise, and game-specific formulation of this involvement. One of the most commonly yet vaguely deployed concepts in the industry and academia alike is immersion--a player's sensation of inhabiting the space represented onscreen. Overuse of this term has diminished its analytical value and confused its meaning, both in analysis and design. Rather than conceiving of immersion as a single experience, Calleja views it as blending different experiential phenomena afforded by involving gameplay. He proposes a framework (based on qualitative research) to describe these phenomena: the player involvement model. This model encompasses two constituent temporal phases--the macro, representing offline involvement, and the micro, representing moment-to-moment involvement during gameplay--as well as six dimensions of player involvement: kinesthetic, spatial, shared, narrative, affective, and ludic. The intensified and internalized experiential blend can culminate in incorporation--a concept that Calleja proposes as an alternative to the problematic immersion. Incorporation, he argues, is a more accurate metaphor, providing a robust foundation for future research and design. |

reexamination of the concept of immersion. Incorporation, he argues, is a more accurate metaphor, providing a robust foundation for future research and design.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Video games</subfield><subfield code="x">Psychological aspects.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Video gamers</subfield><subfield code="x">Psychology.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Virtual reality</subfield><subfield code="x">Psychological aspects.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Jeux vidéo</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect psychologique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Joueurs de jeux vidéo</subfield><subfield code="x">Psychologie.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Réalité virtuelle</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect psychologique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">GAMES</subfield><subfield code="x">Video & Electronic.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Video games</subfield><subfield code="x">Psychological aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Videospiel</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4063465-6</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Computerspiel</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4010457-6</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Virtuelle Realität</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Psychologie</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Immersion</subfield><subfield code="g">Virtuelle Realität</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">GAME STUDIES/General</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCES/Media Studies</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Calleja, Gordon.</subfield><subfield code="t">In-game.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge, Mass. : MIT Press, ©2011</subfield><subfield code="z">9780262015462</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2010038384</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)666402870</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=392721</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH37531190</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH33877612</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Coutts Information Services</subfield><subfield code="b">COUT</subfield><subfield code="n">19728673</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Ebook Library</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL3339299</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10502102</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">392721</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ProQuest MyiLibrary Digital eBook Collection</subfield><subfield code="b">IDEB</subfield><subfield code="n">330270</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Recorded Books, LLC</subfield><subfield code="b">RECE</subfield><subfield code="n">rbeEB00828123</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">5959161</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

Print version record. An investigation of what makes digital games engaging to players and a reexamination of the concept of immersion. Video games Psychological aspects. Video gamers Psychology.
