Zusammenfassung: | "When it was first published in 1997, Geoffrey Sampson's Educating Eve was described as the definitive response to Steven Pinker's The Language Instinct and Noam Chomsky's nativism. In this revised and expanded new edition, Sampson revisits his original arguments in the light of fresh evidence that has emerged since the original publication. Since Chomsky revolutionized the study of language in the 1960s, it has increasingly come to be accepted that language and other knowledge structures are hard-wired in our genes. According to this view, human beings are born with a rich structure of cognition already in place. But people do not realize how thin the evidence for that idea is. The 'Language Instinct' Debate examines the various arguments for instinctive knowledge, and finds that each one rests on false premisses or embodies logical fallacies. The structures of language are shown to be purely cultural creations. With a new chapter entitled 'How People Really Speak' which uses corpus data to analyse how language is used in spontaneous English conversation, responses to critics, extensive revisions throughout, and a new preface by Paul Postal of New York University, this new edition will be an essential purchase for students, academics, and general readers interested in the debate about the 'language instinct'"--EBL |

The structures of language are shown to be purely cultural creations. With a new chapter entitled 'How People Really Speak' which uses corpus data to analyse how language is used in spontaneous English conversation, responses to critics, extensive revisions throughout, and a new preface by Paul Postal of New York University, this new edition will be an essential purchase for students, academics, and general readers interested in the debate about the 'language instinct'"--EBL</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Chomsky, Noam.</subfield><subfield code="2">swd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Pinker, Steven.</subfield><subfield code="2">swd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="630" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Language instinct.</subfield><subfield code="2">swd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Innateness hypothesis (Linguistics)</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh89002195</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Language and languages</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophy.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85074574</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Creativity (Linguistics)</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85033851</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Innéisme (Linguistique)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Langage et langues</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophie.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Créativité (Linguistique)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">LANGUAGE ARTS & DISCIPLINES</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Creativity (Linguistics)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Innateness hypothesis (Linguistics)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Language and languages</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophy</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Nativismus</subfield><subfield code="g">Linguistik</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4496534-5</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Empirismus</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4014610-8</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Taalgenese.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Aangeboren ideeën.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Taalvermogen.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Electronic book.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The "language instinct" debate (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCY4MKFWkPHH7rmYFY36TjK</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Sampson, Geoffrey.</subfield><subfield code="t">"Language instinct" debate.</subfield><subfield code="b">Rev. ed.</subfield><subfield code="d">London ; London ; New York : Continuum, ©2005. 1 online resource (224 pages) : illustrations text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource cr rdacarrier Includes bibliographical references and index. Print version record. 1. Culture or Biology? -- 2. The Original Arguments for a Language Instinct -- 3. How People Really Speak -- 4. The Debate Renewed -- 5. Language Structure Turns Queen's Evidence -- 6. The Creative Mind -- 7. Conclusion. "When it was first published in 1997, Geoffrey Sampson's Educating Eve was described as the definitive response to Steven Pinker's The Language Instinct and Noam Chomsky's nativism. With a new chapter entitled 'How People Really Speak' which uses corpus data to analyse how language is used in spontaneous English conversation, responses to critics, extensive revisions throughout, and a new preface by Paul Postal of New York University, this new edition will be an essential purchase for students, academics, and general readers interested in the debate about the 'language instinct'"--EBL English.
