Zusammenfassung: | Finalist for the 2011 ForeWord Book of the Year in the Women's Issues CategoryCrystals, Reiki, Tarot, Goddess worship--why do these New Age tokens and practices capture the imagination of so many women? How has New Age culture become even more appealing than feminism? And are the two mutually exclusive? By examining New Age practices from macrobiotics to goddess worship to Native rituals, Feminism's New Age: Gender, Appropriation, and the Afterlife of Essentialism seeks to answer these questions by examining white women's participation in this hugely popular spiritual movement. While most feminist approaches to the New Age phenomenon have simply dismissed its adherents for their politically problematic racial appropriation practices, Karyln Crowley looks honestly at the political shortcomings of New Age beliefs and practices while simultaneously reckoning with the affective, political, and cultural motivations which have prompted New Age women's individual and collective spiritualities. New Age spirituality is in fact the dynamic outgrowth of a long-standing tradition of women's social and political power expressed through religious writings, art, and public discourse, and is key to understanding contemporary women's history and religion's role in modern American culture alike. Crowley offers a new and provocative assessment of the significance of the New Age movement, seen through a feminist and critical race studies lens. |

Crowley offers a new and provocative assessment of the significance of the New Age movement, seen through a feminist and critical race studies lens.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Feminism</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">21st century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">New Age movement</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">21st century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Féminisme</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">21e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Nouvel Âge (Mouvement)</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">21e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Feminism & Feminist Theory.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Feminism</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">New Age movement</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">2000-2099</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Feminism's new age (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGPy3Vv8t9dJpWJXyCT4MP</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Crowley, Karlyn, 1968-</subfield><subfield code="t">Feminism's new age.</subfield><subfield code="d">Albany : State University of New York Press, ©2011</subfield><subfield code="z">9781438436258</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2010032065</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)656556160</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=373193</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">hoopla Digital</subfield><subfield code="b">HOPL</subfield><subfield code="n">MWT15233735</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">De Gruyter</subfield><subfield code="b">DEGR</subfield><subfield code="n">9781438436272</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH38700524</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Ebook Library</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL3407256</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10574118</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">373193</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">7040960</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">6958421</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

Print version record. Finalist for the 2011 ForeWord Book of the Year in the Women's Issues CategoryCrystals, Reiki, Tarot, Goddess worship--why do these New Age tokens and practices capture the imagination of so many women?
