Zusammenfassung: | "This book traces the development of African arguments about race over a period of more than 350 years in the Niger Bend in northern Mali"-- "The mobilization of local ideas about racial difference has been important in generating - and intensifying - civil wars that have occurred since the end of colonial rule in all of the countries that straddle the southern edge of the Sahara Desert. From Sudan to Mauritania, the racial categories deployed in contemporary conflicts often hearken back to an older history in which blackness could be equated with slavery and non-blackness with predatory and uncivilized banditry. This book traces the development of arguments about race over a period of more than 350 years in one important place along the southern edge of the Sahara Desert: the Niger Bend in northern Mali. Using Arabic documents held in Timbuktu, as well as local colonial sources in French and oral interviews, Bruce S. Hall reconstructs an African intellectual history of race that long predated colonial conquest, and which has continued to orient inter-African relations ever since"-- |

This book traces the development of arguments about race over a period of more than 350 years in one important place along the southern edge of the Sahara Desert: the Niger Bend in northern Mali. Using Arabic documents held in Timbuktu, as well as local colonial sources in French and oral interviews, Bruce S. Hall reconstructs an African intellectual history of race that long predated colonial conquest, and which has continued to orient inter-African relations ever since"--</subfield><subfield code="c">Provided by publisher</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Black people</subfield><subfield code="z">Africa, West</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Black race</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Slavery</subfield><subfield code="z">Africa, West</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Islam and culture</subfield><subfield code="z">Africa, West</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Race noire</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Islam et civilisation</subfield><subfield code="z">Afrique occidentale</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Personnes noires</subfield><subfield code="z">Afrique occidentale</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Anthropology</subfield><subfield code="x">Cultural.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Discrimination & Race Relations.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Minority Studies.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Black race</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Black people</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Islam and culture</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Slavery</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">West Africa</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Islam</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4027743-4</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Rassentheorie</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4152838-4</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Ethnizität</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4220764-2</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Ethnische Beziehungen</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4176973-9</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Rassismus</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4076527-1</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Sklaverei</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4055260-3</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Mali</subfield><subfield code="z">Nord</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4305105-4</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Westafrika</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4079203-1</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Ethnische Beziehung.</subfield><subfield code="2">idszbz</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Islam.</subfield><subfield code="2">idszbz</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Westafrika.</subfield><subfield code="2">idszbz</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Hall, Bruce S.</subfield><subfield code="t">History of race in Muslim West Africa, 1600-1960.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge ; "This book traces the development of African arguments about race over a period of more than 350 years in the Niger Bend in northern Mali"-- Provided by publisher "The mobilization of local ideas about racial difference has been important in generating - and intensifying - civil wars that have occurred since the end of colonial rule in all of the countries that straddle the southern edge of the Sahara Desert.
