Zusammenfassung: | One of the most vexing problems for governments is building controversial facilities that serve the needs of all citizens but have adverse consequences for host communities. Policymakers must decide not only where to locate often unwanted projects but also what methods to use when interacting with opposition groups. In Site Fights, Daniel P. Aldrich gathers quantitative evidence from close to five hundred municipalities across Japan to show that planners deliberately seek out acquiescent and unorganized communities for such facilities in order to minimize conflict. When protests arise over nuclear power plants, dams, and airports, agencies regularly rely on the coercive powers of the modern state, such as land expropriation and police repression. Only under pressure from civil society do policymakers move toward financial incentives and public relations campaigns. Through fieldwork and interviews with bureaucrats and activists, Aldrich illustrates these dynamics with case studies from Japan, France, and the United States. The incidents highlighted in Site Fights stress the importance of developing engaged civil society even in the absence of crisis, thereby making communities both less attractive to planners of controversial projects and more effective at resisting future threats. |

The incidents highlighted in Site Fights stress the importance of developing engaged civil society even in the absence of crisis, thereby making communities both less attractive to planners of controversial projects and more effective at resisting future threats.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Industrial location</subfield><subfield code="z">Japan.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Industrial location</subfield><subfield code="z">France.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Industrial policy</subfield><subfield code="z">Japan.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Industrial policy</subfield><subfield code="z">France.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Politique industrielle</subfield><subfield code="z">Japon.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Politique industrielle</subfield><subfield code="z">France.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Public Policy</subfield><subfield code="x">Regional Planning.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Industrial location</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Industrial policy</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">France</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJd8gD4vdtqQMdQHvYqbBP</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Japan</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJkT7GyCmyjxytDfqk6Yfq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Industriepolitiek.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Bedrijfsvestiging.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Inspraak.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Burgermaatschappij.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Japan.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Frankrijk.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Site fights (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCG6p36rqQYTvhQ9vhkvDtq</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Aldrich, Daniel P.</subfield><subfield code="t">Site fights.</subfield><subfield code="d">Ithaca : Cornell University Press, 2008</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2007031127</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1352053</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="936" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">BATCHLOAD</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Picking sites -- A logic of tool choice -- Occasional turbulence : airport siting in Japan and France -- Dam the rivers : siting water projects in Japan and France -- Trying to change hearts and minds : Japanese nuclear power plant siting -- David versus Goliath : French nuclear power plant siting. English. One of the most vexing problems for governments is building controversial facilities that serve the needs of all citizens but have adverse consequences for host communities.
