Zusammenfassung: | The unique historical relationship between capitalism and the Jews is crucial to understanding modern European and Jewish history. But the subject has been addressed less often by mainstream historians than by anti-Semites or apologists. In this book Jerry Muller, a leading historian of capitalism, separates myth from reality to explain why the Jewish experience with capitalism has been so important and complex-and so ambivalent. Drawing on economic, social, political, and intellectual history from medieval Europe through contemporary America and Israel, Capitalism and the Jews examines the ways in which thinking about capitalism and thinking about the Jews have gone hand in hand in European thought, and why anticapitalism and anti-Semitism have frequently been linked. The book explains why Jews have tended to be disproportionately successful in capitalist societies, but also why Jews have numbered among the fiercest anticapitalists and Communists. The book shows how the ancient idea that money was unproductive led from the stigmatization of usury and the Jews to the stigmatization of finance and, ultimately, in Marxism, the stigmatization of capitalism itself. Finally, the book traces how the traditional status of the Jews as a diasporic merchant minority both encouraged their economic success and made them particularly vulnerable to the ethnic nationalism of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Providing a fresh look at an important but frequently misunderstood subject, Capitalism and the Jews will interest anyone who wants to understand the Jewish role in the development of capitalism, the role of capitalism in the modern fate of the Jews, or the ways in which the story of capitalism and the Jews has affected the history of Europe and beyond, from the medieval period to our own.--From the publisher. |

Providing a fresh look at an important but frequently misunderstood subject, Capitalism and the Jews will interest anyone who wants to understand the Jewish role in the development of capitalism, the role of capitalism in the modern fate of the Jews, or the ways in which the story of capitalism and the Jews has affected the history of Europe and beyond, from the medieval period to our own.--From the publisher.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Capitalism.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85019958</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Jews</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85070393</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Jewish businesspeople.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh86002350</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Communism.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85029120</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Nationalism.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85090150</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Juifs</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Gens d'affaires juifs.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Nationalisme.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">nationalism.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Economics</subfield><subfield code="x">Comparative.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Economic Conditions.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Economic History.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HISTORY</subfield><subfield code="x">Jewish.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Capitalism</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Communism</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Jewish businesspeople</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Jews</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Nationalism</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Kapitalismus</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Juden.</subfield><subfield code="2">swd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Geschichte.</subfield><subfield code="2">swd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Muller, Jerry Z., 1954-</subfield><subfield code="t">Capitalism and the Jews.</subfield><subfield code="d">Princeton, N.J. : Princeton University Press, ©2010</subfield><subfield code="z">9780691144788</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2009027147</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)428731275</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=350084</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">hoopla Digital</subfield><subfield code="b">HOPL</subfield><subfield code="n">MWT13281917</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH26387677</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Introduction: Thinking about Jews and capitalism -- The long shadow of usury: capitalism and the Jews in modern European thought -- The Jewish response to capitalism: Milton Friedman's paradox reconsidered -- Radical anticapitalism: the Jew as Communist -- The economics of nationalism and the fate of Jews in twentieth-century Europe. The unique historical relationship between capitalism and the Jews is crucial to understanding modern European and Jewish history.
