Zusammenfassung: | "This book explores the epistemological and ethical issues at the foundations of environmental philosophy, emphasizing the conservation of biodiversity. Sahotra Sarkar criticizes previous attempts to attribute intrinsic value to nature and defends an anthropocentric position on biodiversity conservation based on an untraditional concept of transformative value. However, unlike other studies in the field of environmental philosophy, this book is concerned as much with epistemological issues as with environmental ethics. It covers a broad range of topics, including problems of explanation and prediction in traditional ecology and how individual-based models and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology are transforming ecology. Introducing a brief history of conservation biology, Sarkar analyzes the new consensus framework for conservation planning through adaptive management. He concludes with a discussion of the future directions for theoretical research in conservation biology and environmental philosophy."--Jacket |

emphasizing the conservation of biodiversity. Sahotra Sarkar criticizes previous attempts to attribute intrinsic value to nature and defends an anthropocentric position on biodiversity conservation based on an untraditional concept of transformative value. However, unlike other studies in the field of environmental philosophy, this book is concerned as much with epistemological issues as with environmental ethics. It covers a broad range of topics, including problems of explanation and prediction in traditional ecology and how individual-based models and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology are transforming ecology. Introducing a brief history of conservation biology, Sarkar analyzes the new consensus framework for conservation planning through adaptive management. He concludes with a discussion of the future directions for theoretical research in conservation biology and environmental philosophy."--Jacket</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Environmental sciences</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophy.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2006007361</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Bioethics.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85014136</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Biodiversity.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh87005569</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Biodiversity</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D044822</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Sciences de l'environnement</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophie.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Biodiversité.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Life Sciences</subfield><subfield code="x">Biological Diversity.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">NATURE</subfield><subfield code="x">Animals</subfield><subfield code="x">Wildlife.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Biodiversity</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Bioethics</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Environmental sciences</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophy</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Biodiversität</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4601495-0</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Ökologie</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Philosophie</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Umweltethik</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4078520-8</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Theoretische biologie.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Milieuethiek.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Biodiversiteit.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Biodiversity and environmental philosophy (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGxg8Tm7vHQtYBDmm3fxym</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Sarkar, Sahotra.</subfield><subfield code="t">Biodiversity and environmental philosophy.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge, UK ;
