Zusammenfassung: | Labor Markets and Business Cycles integrates search and matching theory with the neoclassical growth model to better understand labor market outcomes. Robert Shimer shows analytically and quantitatively that rigid wages are important for explaining the volatile behavior of the unemployment rate in business cycles. The book focuses on the labor wedge that arises when the marginal rate of substitution between consumption and leisure does not equal the marginal product of labor. According to competitive models of the labor market, the labor wedge should be constant and equal to the labor income tax rate. But in U.S. data, the wedge is strongly countercyclical, making it seem as if recessions are periods when workers are dissuaded from working and firms are dissuaded from hiring because of an increase in the labor income tax rate. When job searches are time consuming and wages are flexible, search frictions--the cost of a job search--act like labor adjustment costs, further exacerbating inconsistencies between the competitive model and data. The book shows that wage rigidities can reconcile the search model with the data, providing a quantitatively more accurate depiction of labor markets, consumption, and investment dynamics. --From publisher's description. |

But in U.S. data, the wedge is strongly countercyclical, making it seem as if recessions are periods when workers are dissuaded from working and firms are dissuaded from hiring because of an increase in the labor income tax rate. --From publisher's description.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Labor market.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh89000875</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Business cycles.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Employment (Economic theory)</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85042916</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Marché du travail.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Cycles économiques.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Emploi.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">employing.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Labor.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Business cycles</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Labor market</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Arbeitsmarkt</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Konjunkturschwankung</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4114270-6</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Konjunkturtheorie</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Labor markets and business cycles (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFWhyHVrtbxJR7dKDGrHFq</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Shimer, Robert.</subfield><subfield code="t">Labor markets and business cycles.</subfield><subfield code="d">Princeton, N.J. : Princeton University Press, ©2010</subfield><subfield code="z">9780691140223</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2009047840</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)465681687</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">CREI lectures in macroeconomics.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no2010084620</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=329780</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">hoopla Digital</subfield><subfield code="b">HOPL</subfield><subfield code="n">MWT16342390</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH23067599</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Coutts Information Services</subfield><subfield code="b">COUT</subfield><subfield code="n">13614036</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - The labor wedge -- Benchmark search model : neutrality -- Real effects of productivity shocks -- Rigid wages -- Looking ahead. Labor Markets and Business Cycles integrates search and matching theory with the neoclassical growth model to better understand labor market outcomes.
