Zusammenfassung: | Although pluralism and religious tolerance are most often associated today with Western Enlightenment thinkers, the roots of these ideologies stretch back to non-Western and premodern societies, including many under Muslim rule. This book explores the development of pluralism in Islam in South Asia through the work of the poet, historian and musician Amir Khusraw and sheds new light on how Islam developed its own culture of tolerance. Countering stereotypes of Islam as intrinsically intolerant, the book provides a better understanding of how rhetorics of pluralism develop, which may aid in identifying and encouraging such discourses in the present. Khusraw, a practicing Muslim who showed great affection toward Hindus and used much indigenous imagery in his poetry, is an ideal figure through whom to explore these issues. Addressing issues of ethnicity, religion and gender in the early medieval period, Alyssa Gabbay demonstrates the pre-modern precedents for pluralism, conveying the broad sweep of Perso-Islamicate culture and the profound transformations it underwent in medieval South Asia. -- Publisher description. |

-- Publisher description.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Amīr Khusraw Dihlavī,</subfield><subfield code="d">approximately 1253-1325</subfield><subfield code="x">Political and social views.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Amīr Khusraw Dihlavī,</subfield><subfield code="d">approximately 1253-1325</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Religious pluralism</subfield><subfield code="z">India</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Islam</subfield><subfield code="x">Relations</subfield><subfield code="x">Hinduism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Hinduism</subfield><subfield code="x">Relations</subfield><subfield code="x">Islam.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">India</subfield><subfield code="x">Ethnic relations</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">TRAVEL</subfield><subfield code="x">Special Interest</subfield><subfield code="x">Literary.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">LITERARY CRITICISM</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Ethnic relations</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Hinduism</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Interfaith relations</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Islam</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Political and social views</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Religious pluralism</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">India</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJmdx47cDXrRhBXHtbvPwC</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Islamic tolerance (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFWCp3thf363h93RDQphQC</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Gabbay, Alyssa.</subfield><subfield code="t">Islamic tolerance.</subfield><subfield code="d">Milton Park, Abingdon, Oxon ; Although pluralism and religious tolerance are most often associated today with Western Enlightenment thinkers, the roots of these ideologies stretch back to non-Western and premodern societies, including many under Muslim rule.
