Zusammenfassung: | Many climatic extremes around the globe, such as severe droughts and floods, can be attributed to the periodic warming of the equatorial Pacific sea surface, termed the El Niño or Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Advances in our understanding of ENSO, in which Edward Sarachik and Mark Cane have been key participants, have led to marked improvements in our ability to predict its development months or seasons, allowing adaptation to global impacts. The book introduces basic concepts and builds to more detailed theoretical treatments. Chapters on the structure and dynamics of the tropical ocean and atmosphere place ENSO in a broader observational and theoretical context. Chapters on ENSO prediction, past and future, and impacts introduce broader implications of the phenomenon. This book provides an introduction to all aspects of this most important mode of global climate variability, for research workers and students of all levels in climate science, oceanography and related fields. |

This book provides an introduction to all aspects of this most important mode of global climate variability, for research workers and students of all levels in climate science, oceanography and related fields.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Southern oscillation.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85125624</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">El Niño Current.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85041456</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Oscillation australe.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">El Niño, Courant.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Earth Sciences</subfield><subfield code="x">Oceanography.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">NATURE</subfield><subfield code="x">Ecosystems & Habitats</subfield><subfield code="x">Oceans & Seas.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Southern oscillation</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Pacific Ocean</subfield><subfield code="z">El Niño Current</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Allgemeine atmosphärische Zirkulation</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4202863-2</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">El-Niño-Phänomen</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4136907-5</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Cane, Mark A.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/nb2010005997</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The El Niño-Southern oscillation phenomenon (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGYyQ87749PDyHMvCTCprq</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Sarachik, Edward S.</subfield><subfield code="t">Niño-Southern oscillation phenomenon.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge ; Many climatic extremes around the globe, such as severe droughts and floods, can be attributed to the periodic warming of the equatorial Pacific sea surface, termed the El Niño or Southern Oscillation (ENSO).
