Zusammenfassung: | In 73 A.D., legend has it, 960 Jewish rebels under siege in the ancient desert fortress of Masada committed suicide rather than surrender to a Roman legion. Recorded in only one historical source, the story of Masada was obscure for centuries. In The Masada Myth, Israeli sociologist Nachman Ben-Yehuda tracks the process by which Masada became an ideological symbol for the State of Israel, the dramatic subject of movies and miniseries, a shrine venerated by generations of Zionists and Israeli soldiers, and the most profitable tourist attraction in modern Israel. Ben-Yehuda describes how, after nearly 1800 years, the long, complex, and unsubstantiated narrative of a Romanized Jew, Josephus Flavius, was edited and augmented in the twentieth century to form a simple and powerful myth of heroism. Ben-Yehuda looks at the ways this new mythical narrative of Masada was created, promoted, and maintained by pre-state Jewish underground organizations, the Israeli army, archaeological teams, mass media, youth movements, textbooks, the tourist industry, and the arts. He discusses the various organizations and movements that created "the Masada experience" (usually a ritual trek through the Judean desert followed by a climb to the fortress and a dramatic reading of the Masada story), and how it changed over decades from a Zionist pilgrimage to a tourist destination. Placing the story in a larger historical, sociological, and psychological context, Ben-Yehuda draws upon theories of collective memory and myth-making to analyze Masada's crucial role in the nation-building process of modern Israel and the formation of a new Jewish identity. An expert on deviance and social control, Ben-Yehuda looks in particular at how and why a military failure and an enigmatic, troubling case of mass suicide (in conflict with Judaism's teachings) were reconstructed and fabricated as a heroic tale |

ancient desert fortress of Masada committed suicide rather than surrender to a Roman legion. An expert on deviance and social control, Ben-Yehuda looks in particular at how and why a military failure and an enigmatic, troubling case of mass suicide (in conflict with Judaism's teachings) were reconstructed and fabricated as a heroic tale</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="505" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="t">Prologue: Masada -- A Chronology --</subfield><subfield code="g">I.</subfield><subfield code="t">The Puzzle and the Background.</subfield><subfield code="g">1.</subfield><subfield code="t">Introduction: The Research Puzzle.</subfield><subfield code="g">2.</subfield><subfield code="t">The Historical Events of Masada.</subfield><subfield code="g">3.</subfield><subfield code="t">Excavations of Masada --</subfield><subfield code="g">II.</subfield><subfield code="t">The Masada Mythical Narrative.</subfield><subfield code="g">4.</subfield><subfield code="t">Shmaria Guttman.</subfield><subfield code="g">5.</subfield><subfield code="t">Masada and Youth Movements.</subfield><subfield code="g">6.</subfield><subfield code="t">Masada and the Pre-State Jewish Underground Groups.</subfield><subfield code="g">7.</subfield><subfield code="t">Masada and the Israeli Army (IDF).</subfield><subfield code="g">8.</subfield><subfield code="t">Masada in Textbooks.</subfield><subfield code="g">9.</subfield><subfield code="t">Masada, the Media, and Tourism.</subfield><subfield code="g">10.</subfield><subfield code="t">Masada in Children's Literature and in Art.</subfield><subfield code="g">11.</subfield><subfield code="t">The Masada Mythical Narrative --</subfield><subfield code="g">III.</subfield><subfield code="t">Analysis, Discussion, and Summary.</subfield><subfield code="g">12.</subfield><subfield code="t">Methodological Framing.</subfield><subfield code="g">13.</subfield><subfield code="t">Theoretical Interpretation.</subfield><subfield code="g">14.</subfield><subfield code="t">Summary and a Personal Note.</subfield><subfield code="t">Appendix: Main Jewish Underground Groups in Palestine, 1920-1948.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="506" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="3">Use copy</subfield><subfield code="f">Restrictions unspecified</subfield><subfield code="2">star</subfield><subfield code="5">MiAaHDL</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="533" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Electronic reproduction.</subfield><subfield code="b">[Place of publication not identified] :</subfield><subfield code="c">HathiTrust Digital Library,</subfield><subfield code="d">2010.</subfield><subfield code="5">MiAaHDL</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="538" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Master and use copy.
