Zusammenfassung: | The abbey of Bec was founded in the eleventh century and was one of the best-known and most influential monasteries in Normandy. Celebrated for its high standard of religious life and its intellectual activity, Bec also had an exceptional degree of institutional independence. The three treatises collected and translated in this volume - Tractatus de professionibus monachorum ('The Profession of Monks'), De professionibus abbatum ('The Profession of Abbots'), and De libertate Beccensis monasterii ('On the Liberty of the Monastery of Bec') - are a striking statement of the position of Bec in relation to episcopal and ducal (later royal) authorities. Little is known about the anonymous author of these works except that he was a twelfth-century monk with an attachment to Augustine and Gregory the Great, and that he had considerable knowledge of canon law. His purpose in writing these treatises was to assert and justify the privileges of Bec at a time when many bishops were reacting against monastic freedom, especially with regard to profession. This volume is an important contribution to understanding not only monasticism in Normandy, but also the conflict between church and state in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. |

This volume is an important contribution to understanding not only monasticism in Normandy, but also the conflict between church and state in the eleventh and twelfth centuries.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Bec (Abbey)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Bec (Abbey)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Monastic and religious life</subfield><subfield code="z">France</subfield><subfield code="z">Normandy</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">Middle Ages, 600-1500.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Church and state</subfield><subfield code="z">France</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">To 1500.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Abbeys</subfield><subfield code="z">France</subfield><subfield code="z">Normandy</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">To 1500.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Normandy (France)</subfield><subfield code="x">Church history.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Vie religieuse et monastique</subfield><subfield code="z">France</subfield><subfield code="z">Normandie</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">600-1500 (Moyen Âge)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Église et État</subfield><subfield code="z">France</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">Jusqu'à 1500.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">RELIGION</subfield><subfield code="x">Institutions & Organizations.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HISTORY</subfield><subfield code="x">Medieval.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Abbeys</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Church and state</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Monastic and religious life</subfield><subfield code="x">Middle Ages</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">France</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJd8gD4vdtqQMdQHvYqbBP</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">France</subfield><subfield code="z">Normandy</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">To 1500</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Church history</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Constable, Giles.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Smith, Bernard,</subfield><subfield code="d">1925-</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCjM7FqRx8xPj4YxMxxRvpd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="710" ind1="2" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Medieval Academy of America.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="t">Three treatises from Bec on the nature of monastic life.</subfield><subfield code="d">Toronto ; Treatises in English and Latin; introduction in English. Tractatus de professionibus monachorum = The professions of monks -- De professionibus abbatum = The professions of abbots -- De libertate Beccensis monasterii = On the liberty of the monastery of Bec. The abbey of Bec was founded in the eleventh century and was one of the best-known and most influential monasteries in Normandy.
