Zusammenfassung: | In light of recent trends of corporate downsizing and debates over corporate responsibility, Sanford Jacoby offers a timely, comprehensive history of twentieth-century welfare capitalism, that is, the history of nonunion corporations that looked after the economic security of employees. Building on three fascinating case studies of "modern manors" (Eastman Kodak, Sears, and TRW), Jacoby argues that welfare capitalism did not expire during the Depression, as traditionally thought. Rather it adapted to the challenges of the 1930s and became a powerful, though overlooked, factor in the history of the welfare state, the labor movement, and the corporation. "Fringe" benefits, new forms of employee participation, and sophisticated anti-union policies are just some of the outgrowths of welfare capitalism that provided a model for contemporary employers seeking to create productive nonunion workplaces. |

"Fringe" benefits, new forms of employee participation, and sophisticated anti-union policies are just some of the outgrowths of welfare capitalism that provided a model for contemporary employers seeking to create productive nonunion workplaces.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="505" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Book Cover; Title; Copyright; Contents.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Welfare state.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85146037</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Capitalism</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">Economic conditions</subfield><subfield code="y">1945-</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85140024</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">État providence.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Capitalisme</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">États-Unis</subfield><subfield code="x">Conditions économiques</subfield><subfield code="y">1945-</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Free Enterprise.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Economic History.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Capitalism</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Economic history</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Welfare state</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Since 1945</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Samfundsvidenskab</subfield><subfield code="a">Økonomi.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Modern manors (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCG8kbtX9JVFrXdqt4YRJwy</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Jacoby, Sanford M., 1953-</subfield><subfield code="t">Modern manors.</subfield><subfield code="d">Princeton, NJ : Princeton University Press, ©1997</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 97007835</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Book collections on Project MUSE.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=335090</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=75110</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Internet Archive</subfield><subfield code="b">INAR</subfield><subfield code="n">modernmanorswelf0000jaco</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH28125598</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - In light of recent trends of corporate downsizing and debates over corporate responsibility, Sanford Jacoby offers a timely, comprehensive history of twentieth-century welfare capitalism, that is, the history of nonunion corporations that looked after the economic security of employees.
