Zusammenfassung: | "Industrial Enlightenment explores the transition through which England passed between 1760 and 1820 on the way to becoming the world's first industrialised nation. In drawing attention to the important role played by scientific knowledge, it focuses on a dimension of this transition which is often overlooked by historians. The book argues that in certain favoured regions, England underwent a process whereby useful knowledge was fused with technological 'know how' to produce the condition described here as Industrial Enlightenment. In the forefront of the process were the natural philosophers who entered into a close and productive relationship with technologists and entrepreneurs. One of the most favoured regions in which this interaction took place was the West Midlands. Accordingly, the book probes the relationship between knowledge generators and knowledge appliers in the specific setting of eighteenth-century Birmingham's booming metal-goods economy. Much of the evidence for this study is drawn from the extraordinary archival record of the activities of Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) and his Soho Manufactory."--BOOK JACKET. |

Much of the evidence for this study is drawn from the extraordinary archival record of the activities of Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) and his Soho Manufactory."--BOOK JACKET.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Industrial revolution</subfield><subfield code="z">England</subfield><subfield code="z">Birmingham.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Science and industry</subfield><subfield code="z">England</subfield><subfield code="z">Birmingham</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Birmingham (England)</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">18th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Birmingham (England)</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">19th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Révolution industrielle</subfield><subfield code="z">Angleterre</subfield><subfield code="z">Birmingham.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Sciences et industrie</subfield><subfield code="z">Angleterre</subfield><subfield code="z">Birmingham</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Industries</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Industrial revolution</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Science and industry</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">England</subfield><subfield code="z">Birmingham</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJyRDtXXDV6VvXBPWj4wmd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">1700-1899</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Industrial enlightenment (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGfxrfFwQfBBc4xvftrwmd</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Jones, Peter, 1949-</subfield><subfield code="t">Industrial enlightenment.</subfield><subfield code="d">Manchester, UK ; New York : Manchester University Press ; New York : Distributed in the United States exclusively by Palgrave Macmillan, 2008</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)232981055</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1640086</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">1640086</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Project MUSE</subfield><subfield code="b">MUSE</subfield><subfield code="n">muse72905</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">14887255</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

The eighteenth-century knowledge economy -- 2. Birmingham and the West Midlands -- 3. The dissemination and validation of experimental science -- 4. The science and technology interface -- 5. Industry, enlightenment and dissent -- 6. The republic of letters in disarray -- 7. Conclusion. "Industrial Enlightenment explores the transition through which England passed between 1760 and 1820 on the way to becoming the world's first industrialised nation.
