Zusammenfassung: | Botham argues that divergent Catholic and Protestant theologies of marriage and race, reinforced by regional differences between the West and the South, shaped the two pivotal cases that frame this volume, the 1948 California Supreme Court case of Perez v. Lippold (which successfully challenged California's antimiscegenation statutes on the grounds of religious freedom) and the 1967 U.S. Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia (which declared legal bans on interracial marriage unconstitutional). Botham contends that the white southern Protestant notion that God "dispersed" the races, as opposed to the American Catholic emphasis on human unity and common origins, points to ways that religion influenced the course of litigation and illuminates the religious bases for Christian racist and antiracist movements. --from publisher description. |

--from publisher description.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Online resource (HeinOnline, viewed September 12, 2016).</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Interracial marriage</subfield><subfield code="x">Law and legislation</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Religion and law</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Religion et droit</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">LAW</subfield><subfield code="x">Administrative Law & Regulatory Practice.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">RELIGION</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Interracial marriage</subfield><subfield code="x">Law and legislation</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Religion and law</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Blandäktenskap</subfield><subfield code="x">historia</subfield><subfield code="z">Förenta staterna.</subfield><subfield code="2">sao</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">"Almighty God created the races" (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGGh8xBxxFgwRYBMF3fJ8P</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Botham, Fay, 1968-</subfield><subfield code="t">Almighty God created the races.</subfield><subfield code="d">Chapel Hill : University of North Carolina Press, ©2009</subfield><subfield code="z">9780807833186</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2009024330</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)317929505</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="966" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">DE-862</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=312421</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="966" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">DE-863</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=312421</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Internet Archive</subfield><subfield code="b">INAR</subfield><subfield code="n">almightygodcreat0000both</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Catholic California : the historic junction of religion, region, and law in Perez v. Lippold -- The historical origins of American laws on interracial sex and marriage : the role of religion and region -- Church authority or states' rights? Protestant and Catholic theologies of marriage -- Noah's sons and common origins in Adam and Eve : Protestant and Catholic theologies of race -- States' rights and the southern White Protestant theology of race in antimiscegenation law and cases, 1867-1964 -- The southern lingua franca of race : Judge Leon M. Bazile and White Catholics. Botham argues that divergent Catholic and Protestant theologies of marriage and race, reinforced by regional differences between the West and the South, shaped the two pivotal cases that frame this volume, the 1948 California Supreme Court case of Perez v.
