Zusammenfassung: | As medical technology advances and severely injured or ill people can be kept alive and functioning long beyond what was previously medically possible, the debate surrounding the ethics of end-of-life care and quality-of-life issues has grown more urgent. In this lucid and vigorous book, Craig Paterson discusses assisted suicide and euthanasia from a fully fledged but non-dogmatic secular natural law perspective. He rehabilitates and revitalises the natural law approach to moral reasoning by developing a pluralistic account of just why we are required by practical rationality to respect and not violate key demands generated by the primary goods of persons, especially human life. Important issues that shape the moral quality of an action are explained and analysed: intention/foresight; action/omission; action/consequences; killing/letting die; innocence/non-innocence; person/non-person. Paterson defends the central normative proposition that 'it is always a serious moral wrong to intentionally kill an innocent human person, whether self or another, notwithstanding any further appeal to consequences or motive'. |

ill people can be kept alive and functioning long beyond what was previously medically possible, the debate surrounding the ethics of end-of-life care and quality-of-life issues has grown more urgent. Paterson defends the central normative proposition that 'it is always a serious moral wrong to intentionally kill an innocent human person, whether self or another, notwithstanding any further appeal to consequences or motive'.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Assisted suicide</subfield><subfield code="x">Moral and ethical aspects.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Euthanasia</subfield><subfield code="x">Moral and ethical aspects.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Natural law.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85090244</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Suicide, Assisted</subfield><subfield code="x">ethics</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Euthanasia</subfield><subfield code="x">ethics</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Ethics</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D004989</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Aide au suicide</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect moral.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Euthanasie</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect moral.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Droit naturel.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">PHILOSOPHY</subfield><subfield code="x">Ethics & Moral Philosophy.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Assisted suicide</subfield><subfield code="x">Moral and ethical aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Euthanasia</subfield><subfield code="x">Moral and ethical aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Natural law</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Naturrecht</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4041411-5</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Suizid</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4054423-0</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Beihilfe</subfield><subfield code="g">Strafrecht</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4112698-1</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Selbstbestimmung</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4135889-2</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Assisted suicide</subfield><subfield code="x">Moral and ethical aspects.</subfield><subfield code="2">nli</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Euthanasia</subfield><subfield code="x">Moral and ethical aspects.</subfield><subfield code="2">nli</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Natural law.</subfield><subfield code="2">nli</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="0" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Euthanasie.</subfield><subfield code="2">swd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Assisted suicide and euthanasia (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFyytrT7X6JXVpqWF3trmd</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Paterson, Craig, 1965-</subfield><subfield code="t">Assisted suicide and euthanasia.</subfield><subfield code="d">Aldershot, England ; Introduction -- Justifications for suicide, assisted suicide and euthanasia -- A revised natural law ethics -- The good of human life -- Suicide, assisted suicide and voluntary euthanasia -- Non-voluntary and involuntary euthanasia -- State intervention and the common good. As medical technology advances and severely injured or ill people can be kept alive and functioning long beyond what was previously medically possible, the debate surrounding the ethics of end-of-life care and quality-of-life issues has grown more urgent.
