Zusammenfassung: | New industrial machines and power sources, far from eliminating work animals from nineteenth-century America, required millions of horses to supply the energy necessary for industrial development. Horses were ubiquitous in cities and on farms, providing power for transportation, construction, manufacturing, and agriculture. Mechanization actually increased the need for horsepower by expanding the range of tasks requiring it. Ann Greene argues for recognition of horses' critical contribution to the history of American energy and the rise of American industrial power, and a new understanding of the reasons for their replacement as prime movers. Rather than a result of "inevitable" technological change, it was Americans' social and political choices about power consumption that sealed this animal's fate. The rise and fall of the workhorse was defined by the kinds of choices that Americans made and would continue to make--choices that emphasized individual mobility and autonomy, and assumed, above all, abundant energy resources.--From publisher description |

The rise and fall of the workhorse was defined by the kinds of choices that Americans made and would continue to make--choices that emphasized individual mobility and autonomy, and assumed, above all, abundant energy resources.--From publisher description</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="504" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Includes bibliographical references (pages 285-311) and index.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="505" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Why horses -- A landscape for horses -- Remaking horses -- Civil War horses -- Horses as industrial workers -- Studying horses -- From horse powered to horseless.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">In English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Draft horses</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">19th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Working animals</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">19th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Chevaux de trait</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">19e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Animaux de travail</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">19e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">PETS</subfield><subfield code="x">Horses</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HISTORY</subfield><subfield code="z">United States</subfield><subfield code="y">19th Century.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Draft horses</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Working animals</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">1800-1899</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Horses at work (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFHM4qDM6m4vFQCxPRB9Dq</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Greene, Ann Norton, 1952-</subfield><subfield code="t">Horses at work.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge, Mass. : Harvard University Press, 2008</subfield><subfield code="z">9780674031296</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2008014745</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)220100352</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=282531</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH39592044</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">De Gruyter</subfield><subfield code="b">DEGR</subfield><subfield code="n">9780674037908</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL -
