520 | 8 | |a Annotation |b The summer of 2008 was the summer of love and commitment for gays and lesbians in the United States. When Gay People Get Married gives readers a primer on the current state of the same-sex marriage debate, and a new way of framing the issue that provides valuable new insights into the political, social, and personal stakes involved. The experiences of other countries and these pioneering American states serve as a crystal ball as we grapple with this polarizing issue in the American context. The evidence shows both that marriage changes gay people more than gay people change marriage, and that it is the most liberal countries and states making the first move to recognize gay couples. In the end, Badgett compellingly shows that allowing gay couples to marry does not destroy the institution of marriage and that many gay couples do benefit, in expected as well as surprising ways, from the legal, social, and political rights that the institution offers. | |

The evidence shows both that marriage changes gay people more than gay people change marriage, and that it is the most liberal countries and states making the first move to recognize gay couples. In the end, Badgett compellingly shows that allowing gay couples to marry does not destroy the institution of marriage and that many gay couples do benefit, in expected as well as surprising ways, from the legal, social, and political rights that the institution offers.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Same-sex marriage</subfield><subfield code="x">Law and legislation.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh97004784</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Gay couples</subfield><subfield code="x">Legal status, laws, etc.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2004011627</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Gay Studies.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Gay couples</subfield><subfield code="x">Legal status, laws, etc.</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Same-sex marriage</subfield><subfield code="x">Law and legislation</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Äktenskap</subfield><subfield code="x">homosexuella män</subfield><subfield code="x">lesbiska</subfield><subfield code="x">juridik</subfield><subfield code="x">lagar.</subfield><subfield code="2">kao</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Samlevnad.</subfield><subfield code="2">kao</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Same-sex marriage</subfield><subfield code="x">Law and legislation.</subfield><subfield code="2">nli</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Gay couples</subfield><subfield code="x">Legal status, laws, etc.</subfield><subfield code="2">nli</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Samkönade äktenskap</subfield><subfield code="x">juridik och lagstiftning.</subfield><subfield code="2">sao</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">When gay people get married (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFMTcrW4Pdtpbk3vYdYfpX</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Badgett, M.V. Print version record. Annotation The summer of 2008 was the summer of love and commitment for gays and lesbians in the United States.
