Zusammenfassung: | "Is philosophy hopelessly opposed to art? Images of Thought answers negatively, claiming that visual images can be used effectively to grasp complex thoughts, and philosophy can be deployed to deepen our understanding of art. Jorge J.E. Gracia provides philosophical interpretations of seventeen works by the Cuban American artist Carlos Estevez that engage such topics as self-knowledge, the nature of the universe, faith and reason, permanence and change, the self and the other, women and men, freedom and determinism, providence, and predestination. The study's novelty lies both in its use of the interpretation of art to understand traditional philosophical problems and the theory it proposes concerning the nature of interpretation. The clarity of the discussion and an engaging style make it accessible to a wider audience."--Jacket |

The clarity of the discussion and an engaging style make it accessible to a wider audience."--Jacket</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Estévez, Carlos,</subfield><subfield code="d">1969-</subfield><subfield code="x">Criticism and interpretation.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="600" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Estévez, Carlos,</subfield><subfield code="d">1969-</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJbtmbtK7Qgctdtcg4MpT3</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">ART</subfield><subfield code="x">Individual Artists</subfield><subfield code="x">Monographs.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">ART</subfield><subfield code="x">Individual Artists</subfield><subfield code="x">Artists' Books.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">ART</subfield><subfield code="x">Individual Artists</subfield><subfield code="x">Essays.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">PHILOSOPHY / General</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Criticism, interpretation, etc.</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Images of thought (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFtm3Rwr8g8PjhPRwRgrpX</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Gracia, Jorge J.E.</subfield><subfield code="t">Images of thought.</subfield><subfield code="d">Albany, NY : SUNY Press, ©2009</subfield><subfield code="z">9780791493793</subfield><subfield code="z">0791493792</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2008028300</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)233697349</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">SUNY series in Latin American and Iberian thought and culture.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n88501710</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=277422</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Ebook Library</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL3408017</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">277422</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">9568185</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">3045842</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

Philosophical Interpretations of Art -- Appendix 1 Interview with Carlos Estevez -- Appendix 2 Carlos Estevez's Biographical Chronology -- Appendix 3 Carlos Estevez's Images of Thought, Exhibition Checklist. "Is philosophy hopelessly opposed to art? Images of Thought answers negatively, claiming that visual images can be used effectively to grasp complex thoughts, and philosophy can be deployed to deepen our understanding of art. Jorge J.E. Gracia provides philosophical interpretations of seventeen works by the Cuban American artist Carlos Estevez that engage such topics as self-knowledge, the nature of the universe, faith and reason, permanence and change, the self and the other, women and men, freedom and determinism, providence, and predestination.
