Zusammenfassung: | British imperialism's favorite literary narrative might seem to be conquest. But real British conquests also generated a surprising cultural obsession with suffering, sacrifice, defeat, and melancholia. "There was," writes John Kucich, "seemingly a different crucifixion scene marking the historical gateway to each colonial theater." In Imperial Masochism, Kucich reveals the central role masochistic forms of voluntary suffering played in late-nineteenth-century British thinking about imperial politics and class identity. Placing the colonial writers Robert Louis Stevenson, Olive Schreiner, Rudyard Kipling, and Joseph Conrad in their cultural context, Kucich shows how the ideological and psychological dynamics of empire, particularly its reorganization of class identities at the colonial periphery, depended on figurations of masochism. --From publisher's description |

In Imperial Masochism, Kucich reveals the central role masochistic forms of voluntary suffering played in late-nineteenth-century British thinking about imperial politics and class identity. --From publisher's description</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">English fiction</subfield><subfield code="y">19th century</subfield><subfield code="x">History and criticism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Masochism in literature.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85081829</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Social classes in literature.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85123925</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Imperialism in literature.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh94004979</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Great Britain</subfield><subfield code="x">Colonies</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">19th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Roman anglais</subfield><subfield code="y">19e siècle</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire et critique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Masochisme dans la littérature.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Classes sociales dans la littérature.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Impérialisme dans la littérature.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Grande-Bretagne</subfield><subfield code="x">Colonies</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">19e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">LITERARY CRITICISM</subfield><subfield code="x">European</subfield><subfield code="x">English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">British colonies</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">English fiction</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Imperialism in literature</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Masochism in literature</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Social classes in literature</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Imperialisme.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Sociale klassen.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Masochisme.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Engels.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Bellettrie.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">1800 - Princeton : Princeton University Press, ©2007. 1 online resource (x, 258 pages) text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource cr rdacarrier data file Includes bibliographical references and index. Melancholy magic: Robert Louis Stevenson's evangelical anti-imperialism -- Olive Schreiner's preoedipal dreams: feminism, class, and the South African War -- Sadomasochism and the magical group: Kipling's middle-class imperialism -- The masochism of the craft: Conrad's imperial professionalism. British imperialism's favorite literary narrative might seem to be conquest. --From publisher's description Print version record.
