Zusammenfassung: | In this account of a social experiment gone awry, Israel Drori exposes a little-known and recent phenomenon: the importation of foreign workers from Third World economies to Israel. Focusing on Romanian, Thai, and Filipina migrants brought to Israel for specified periods of employment, Drori examines the effect of migrants on Israeli society, particularly the issue of national identity. What began as a political corrective--avoiding the danger of hiring Palestinians to do work that Jewish Israelis would not--has developed into a social and economic problem the state does not know how to handle. In addition to examining the work experiences and social lives of these workers, Drori also situates the Israeli case within a global context, where many affluent nations have significant populations of marginalized, undocumented workers. |

In addition to examining the work experiences and social lives of these workers, Drori also situates the Israeli case within a global context, where many affluent nations have significant populations of marginalized, undocumented workers.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Foreign workers</subfield><subfield code="z">Israel.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Foreign workers</subfield><subfield code="x">Government policy</subfield><subfield code="z">Israel.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Foreign workers, Filipino</subfield><subfield code="z">Israel.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Foreign workers, Romanian</subfield><subfield code="z">Israel.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Foreign workers, Thai</subfield><subfield code="z">Israel.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Travailleurs étrangers philippins</subfield><subfield code="z">Israël.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Travailleurs étrangers roumains</subfield><subfield code="z">Israël.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Travailleurs étrangers thaïlandais</subfield><subfield code="z">Israël.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Travailleurs étrangers</subfield><subfield code="z">Israël.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Travailleurs étrangers</subfield><subfield code="x">Politique gouvernementale</subfield><subfield code="z">Israël.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Labor.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Labor & Industrial Relations.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Foreign workers</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Foreign workers, Filipino</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Foreign workers</subfield><subfield code="x">Government policy</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Foreign workers, Romanian</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Foreign workers, Thai</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Israel</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJdgWx83Xb7cjjrMXBJYyd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Foreign workers in Israel (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFKhMw9HJxTWTvj6w3JGVC</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Drori, Israel.</subfield><subfield code="t">Foreign workers in Israel.</subfield><subfield code="d">Albany : SUNY Press, ©2009</subfield><subfield code="z">9780791476895</subfield><subfield code="z">0791476898</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2008024984</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)231834308</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">SUNY series in Israeli studies.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n86703596</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=265915</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="l">CBO01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=265915</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Print version record. English. In this account of a social experiment gone awry, Israel Drori exposes a little-known and recent phenomenon: the importation of foreign workers from Third World economies to Israel.
