Zusammenfassung: | "Although English comment clauses such as I think and you know have been widely studied, this book constitutes the first full-length diachronic treatment, focusing on comment clauses formed with common verbs of perception and cognition in a variety of syntactic forms. It understands comment clauses as causal pragmatic markers that undergo grammaticalization, and acquire pragmatic and politeness functions and subjective and intersubjective meanings. To date, the prevailing view of their syntactic development, which is extrapolated from synchronic studies, is that they originate in matrix clauses which become systematically indeterminate and are reanalyzed as parenthetical. In this corpus-based study, Laurel J. Brinton shows that the historical data do not bear out this view, and proposes a more varied and complex conception of the development of comment clauses. Researchers and students of the English language and historical linguistics will certainly consider Brinton's findings to be of great interest."--Jacket |

Researchers and students of the English language and historical linguistics will certainly consider Brinton's findings to be of great interest."--Jacket</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">English language</subfield><subfield code="x">Clauses.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85043455</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Historical linguistics.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85061192</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Linguistique historique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">historical linguistics.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">LANGUAGE ARTS & DISCIPLINES</subfield><subfield code="x">Grammar & Punctuation.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">LANGUAGE ARTS & DISCIPLINES</subfield><subfield code="x">Linguistics</subfield><subfield code="x">Syntax.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">English language</subfield><subfield code="x">Clauses</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Historical linguistics</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Engels.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Bijwoordelijke bijzinnen.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The comment clause in English (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFJKddXrvVVf3HQdfxwFXd</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Brinton, Laurel J.</subfield><subfield code="t">Comment clause in English.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge ; Cambridge ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2008. 1 online resource (xvii, 280 pages) : illustrations text txt rdacontent computer c rdamedia online resource cr rdacarrier Studies in English language Includes bibliographical references (pages 257-274) and indexes. Print version record. Introduction : comment clauses, parentheticals, and pragmatic markers -- Semantic and syntactic development of pragmatic markers -- Processes of change -- Comment clauses with say -- I mean -- Comment clauses with see -- If you will and as it were -- Comment clauses with look -- What's more and what else -- Epistemic/evidential parentheticals : I gather and I find -- Concluding remarks. "Although English comment clauses such as I think and you know have been widely studied, this book constitutes the first full-length diachronic treatment, focusing on comment clauses formed with common verbs of perception and cognition in a variety of syntactic forms. Researchers and students of the English language and historical linguistics will certainly consider Brinton's findings to be of great interest."--Jacket English.
