Zusammenfassung: | The war in Iraq brought global politics into the living rooms of ordinary people around the world in 2003-4. This defining event, which influenced the domestic agenda in many countries, may change the way people perceive power and the politics of power. The Global Civil Society Yearbook shows how those perceptions can be shaped by the huge diversity of individuals, movements, NGOs, networks - and the ideas and values they represent - acting across borders and beyond national politics. Now in its fourth year of publication, the Global Civil Society Yearbook is the standard work on the topic, essential reading for social and political scientists, activists, students, journalists and policy makers. Global Civil Society 2004/5 adopts an unorthodox approach to major geo-political issues including oil, the Middle East and democracy. Yahia Said examines oil and activism, Mohamed el Said-Sayed explores Middle Eastern perspectives, and Heba Raouf Ezzat outlines a new multicultural approach to global civil society. The emergence of what Mary Kaldor calls 'a new kind of global politics' has implications for sovereignty and democracy, which Global Civil Society 2004/5 tackles head-on. Hilary Wainwright identifies the conditions in which global civil society can strengthen and reinvigorate local democracy. In contrast, Kenneth Anderson and David Rieff question global civil society's claim to represent world opinion, arguing that the hotchpotch of environmental groups, feminist networks and human rights activists are merely undemocratic and unaccountable 'social movement missionaries.' Global Civil Society 2004-5 includes a wealth of data on globalisation, the rule of law, NGO growth, values and attitudes, governance, civil liberties and a chronology of the myriad protests, conferences and campaigns that are the sinews of global civil society. |

Hilary Wainwright identifies the conditions in which global civil society can strengthen and reinvigorate local democracy. In contrast, Kenneth Anderson and David Rieff question global civil society's claim to represent world opinion, arguing that the hotchpotch of environmental groups, feminist networks and human rights activists are merely undemocratic and unaccountable 'social movement missionaries.' Global Civil Society 2004-5 includes a wealth of data on globalisation, the rule of law, NGO growth, values and attitudes, governance, civil liberties and a chronology of the myriad protests, conferences and campaigns that are the sinews of global civil society.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Civil society.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh90004194</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">International relations.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85067435</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Société civile.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Relations internationales.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">international relations.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Essays.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Civil society.</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="0">(OCoLC)fst00862876</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">International relations.</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="0">(OCoLC)fst00977053</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Societe civile.</subfield><subfield code="2">rvm</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Relations internationales.</subfield><subfield code="2">rvm</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Anheier, Helmut K.,</subfield><subfield code="d">1954-</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJxhqkgyjgHVFbKMTtqvpP</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n90626145</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Glasius, Marlies.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/no00094270</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Kaldor, Mary.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="710" ind1="2" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Centre for Civil Society (London School of Economics and Political Science)</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/nr00010308</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="710" ind1="2" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">London School of Economics and Political Science.</subfield><subfield code="b">Centre for the Study of Global Governance.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/nr96020894</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Global civil society 2004/5 (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGDChPqtq6YD4PftCdRPcd</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="t">Global civil society 2004/5.</subfield><subfield code="d">London ; Print version record. The war in Iraq brought global politics into the living rooms of ordinary people around the world in 2003-4. In contrast, Kenneth Anderson and David Rieff question global civil society's claim to represent world opinion, arguing that the hotchpotch of environmental groups, feminist networks and human rights activists are merely undemocratic and unaccountable 'social movement missionaries.'
