Zusammenfassung:John Rae wrote on a number of scientific subjects, but it is for his contribution to economics that he is best remembered. Although Rae was held in high esteem by some of the great names from the past who have openly acknowledged his originality and their indebtedness to him, he has not yet received all the attention he deserves. This collection of essays by respected economists redresses the general neglect of Rae as a classical economist, and examines his role as a political economist. The contributions to the volume are presented in four sections: John Rae's life and works. Issues of methodology and history. Capital and related issues. Rae's contributions to the development of economic ideas in the history of economic thought. They assess Rae's main contributions to economics in the areas of economic methodology, history of technology, conspicuous consumption, the theory of capital and technical change, the demand for and supply of capital, saving and interest in the theory of accumulation, monetary theory, international trade and public policy. The Economics of John Rae is a much-needed evaluation of the work of an important economist, and will stimulate further study by historians of economic thought and methodology.
