Zusammenfassung: | What makes individuals with divergent and often conflicting interests join together and act in unison? By drawing on the fear of external threats, this book develops a theory of 'negative association' that examines the dynamics captured by the maxim 'The enemy of my enemy is my friend'. It then traces its role from Greek and Roman political thought, through Machiavelli and the reason of state thinkers, and Hobbes and his emulators and critics, to the realists of the twentieth century. By focusing on the role of fear and enmity in the formation of individual and group identity, this book reveals an important tradition in the history of political thought and offers insights into texts that are considered familiar. This book demonstrates that the fear of external threats is an essential element of the formation and preservation of political groups and that its absence renders political association unsustainable. |

This book demonstrates that the fear of external threats is an essential element of the formation and preservation of political groups and that its absence renders political association unsustainable.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Political science</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophy.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh88004669</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Political sociology.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Political psychology.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85104425</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Group identity</subfield><subfield code="x">Political aspects.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Fear</subfield><subfield code="x">Political aspects.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Sociologie politique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Psychologie politique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Identité collective</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect politique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Peur</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect politique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Anthropology</subfield><subfield code="x">Cultural.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Public Policy</subfield><subfield code="x">Cultural Policy.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">SOCIAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Popular Culture.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Fear</subfield><subfield code="x">Political aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Group identity</subfield><subfield code="x">Political aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Political psychology</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Political science</subfield><subfield code="x">Philosophy</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Political sociology</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Politische Psychologie</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Politik</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Gruppenidentität</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4140349-6</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Bedrohung</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Angst</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4002053-8</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Politische Philosophie</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Feindbild</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4016641-7</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Sozialpsychologie</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4055891-5</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Fear of enemies and collective action (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFKWTkQfkpRfxWTMqBqrVP</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Evrigenis, Ioannis D., 1971-</subfield><subfield code="t">Fear of enemies and collective action.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge ; Print version record. What makes individuals with divergent and often conflicting interests join together and act in unison?
