Zusammenfassung: | James Casey offers an innovative study of prestige, power and the role of the family in a Mediterranean city during the early modern period. He focuses on the structure and values of the ruling class of Granada, where a new elite consolidated its authority. The study suggests that their power was linked to the pursuit of honour, which demanded participation in the politics of the commonwealth and depended greatly on the network of personal relations which they were able to build with kinsmen, clients and patrons. It explores the way in which this system contributed to the relative tranquillity of the community during a turbulent time of religious and political change, that of the rise of absolutism and of the Counter Reformation. The book sheds fresh light on the nature of the early modern family and will be essential reading for historians of early modern Spain and Europe. |

Casey offers an innovative study of prestige, power and the role of the family in a Mediterranean city during the early modern period. The book sheds fresh light on the nature of the early modern family and will be essential reading for historians of early modern Spain and Europe.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Families</subfield><subfield code="z">Spain</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">16th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Families</subfield><subfield code="z">Spain</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">17th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Elite (Social sciences)</subfield><subfield code="z">Spain</subfield><subfield code="z">Granada</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Spain</subfield><subfield code="x">Social conditions</subfield><subfield code="y">To 1800.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85126181</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Familles</subfield><subfield code="z">Espagne</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">16e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Familles</subfield><subfield code="z">Espagne</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">17e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Élite (Sciences sociales)</subfield><subfield code="z">Espagne</subfield><subfield code="z">Grenade</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">FAMILY & RELATIONSHIPS</subfield><subfield code="x">Alternative Family.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">FAMILY & RELATIONSHIPS</subfield><subfield code="x">Reference.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Elite (Social sciences)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Families</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Social conditions</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Spain</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJqFTrvj6Mhw6JfTGmqJDq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Spain</subfield><subfield code="z">Granada</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJfmpFb99c6MQQFYfDq4v3</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Elite</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Familie</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Macht</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Soziales Netzwerk</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Granada</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4021815-6</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Granada (stad)</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">To 1800</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Family and community in early modern Spain (Work)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGrdHCPKfyv4DMXJXGxQ4q</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Casey, James, 1944-</subfield><subfield code="t">Family and community in early modern Spain.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge, UK ; Print version record. James Casey offers an innovative study of prestige, power and the role of the family in a Mediterranean city during the early modern period. English. Families Spain History 16th century.
