Zusammenfassung: | Setting a group of medieval carved ivory horns in the specific artistic and historical context in which they were manufactured, used and re-used, this book presentsa mine of information for the study of medieval history. The first chapters explore such technical aspects as the cutting and carving of oliphants, and also the broader issues of the morphology of ivory and its availability in the Mediterranean basin in the Middle Ages. On the basis of specific carving methods and varying vocabulary of motifs, the oliphants are organized into groups and their probable sites of production are suggested. The core of this volume, however, is the attempt to place them in their specific historical context. The purpose of their mass-production, namely their patronage and original function, is explored, but also their reception and new functions in the church treasuries of Latin Europe is broadly discussed. -- Book jacket. |

-- Book jacket.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Oliphant.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2004000318</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Decorative arts, Fatimid</subfield><subfield code="x">Influence.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Olifant.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Arts décoratifs f*atimides</subfield><subfield code="x">Influence.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Arts décoratifs fātimides</subfield><subfield code="x">Influence.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">oliphants.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">CRAFTS & HOBBIES</subfield><subfield code="x">Carving.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Oliphant</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Islam</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Olifant</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4123883-7</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Ivoor.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Shalem, Avinoam.</subfield><subfield code="t">Oliphant.</subfield><subfield code="d">Leiden ; Boston : Brill, 2004</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2004045784</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Islamic history and civilization ;</subfield><subfield code="v">v. 54.</subfield><subfield code="x">0929-2403</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n93049218</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=167237</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH37543882</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL - Ebook Library</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL3003961</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10175365</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">167237</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ProQuest MyiLibrary Digital eBook Collection</subfield><subfield code="b">IDEB</subfield><subfield code="n">91497</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">15359918</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">2507148</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

Print version record. Setting a group of medieval carved ivory horns in the specific artistic and historical context in which they were manufactured, used and re-used, this book presentsa mine of information for the study of medieval history.
