Zusammenfassung: | This study provides the first comprehensive discussion of conservation in Nazi Germany. Looking at Germany in an international context, it analyzes the roots of conservation in the late nineteenth century, the gradual adaptation of racist and nationalist language among conservationists in the 1920s, and the inner distance to the republic of Weimar. It describes how the German conservation movement came to cooperate with the Nazi regime and discusses the ideological and institutional lines between the conservation movement and the Nazis. Uekoetter further examines how the conservation movement struggled to do away with a troublesome past after World War II, making the environmentalists one of the last groups in German society to face up to its Nazi burden. It is a story of ideological convergence, of tactical alliances, of careerism, of implication in crimes against humanity, and of deceit and denial after 1945. It is also a story that offers valuable lessons for today's environmental movement. |

Looking at Germany in an international context, it analyzes the roots of conservation in the late nineteenth century, the gradual adaptation of racist and nationalist language among conservationists in the 1920s, and the inner distance to the republic of Weimar. It describes how the German conservation movement came to cooperate with the Nazi regime and discusses the ideological and institutional lines between the conservation movement and the Nazis. Uekoetter further examines how the conservation movement struggled to do away with a troublesome past after World War II, making the environmentalists one of the last groups in German society to face up to its Nazi burden. It is a story of ideological convergence, of tactical alliances, of careerism, of implication in crimes against humanity, and of deceit and denial after 1945. It is also a story that offers valuable lessons for today's environmental movement.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="588" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Print version record.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Nature conservation</subfield><subfield code="z">Germany</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">20th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">National socialism and science.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh89001061</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Nature</subfield><subfield code="x">Conservation</subfield><subfield code="z">Allemagne</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">20e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Nazisme et sciences.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">NATURE</subfield><subfield code="x">Natural Resources.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Environmental Economics.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Green Business.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">National socialism and science</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Nature conservation</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Germany</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtCD3rcKcPDx6FHmjvrbd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Naturschutz</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4115348-0</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Drittes Reich</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4013021-6</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Nationalsozialismus</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Deutschland</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">1900-1999</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The green and the brown (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGX9V64BMqMPqfrMJcbxfy</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Uekötter, Frank, 1970-</subfield><subfield code="t">Green and the brown.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge ;
