Zusammenfassung: | In the early fifteenth century, English poets responded to a changed climate of patronage, instituted by Henry IV and successor monarchs, by inventing a new tradition of public and elite poetry. Following Chaucer and others, Hoccleve and Lydgate brought to English verse a style and subject matter writing about their King, nation, and themselves, and their innovations influenced a continuous line of poets running through and beyond Wyatt. A crucial aspect of this tradition is its development of ideas and practices associated with the role of poet laureate. Robert J. Meyer-Lee examines the nature and significance of this tradition as it developed from the fourteenth century to Tudor times, tracing its evolution from one author to the next. This study illuminates the relationships between poets and political power and makes plain the tremendous impact this verse has had on the shape of English literary culture. |

This study illuminates the relationships between poets and political power and makes plain the tremendous impact this verse has had on the shape of English literary culture.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">English poetry</subfield><subfield code="y">Middle English, 1100-1500</subfield><subfield code="x">History and criticism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">English poetry</subfield><subfield code="y">Early modern, 1500-1700</subfield><subfield code="x">History and criticism.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Politics and literature</subfield><subfield code="z">England</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">To 1500.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Politics and literature</subfield><subfield code="z">England</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">16th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Poésie anglaise</subfield><subfield code="y">1100-1500 (Moyen anglais)</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire et critique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Politique et littérature</subfield><subfield code="z">Angleterre</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">16e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POETRY</subfield><subfield code="x">English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">English poetry</subfield><subfield code="x">Early modern</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">English poetry</subfield><subfield code="x">Middle English</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Politics and literature</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">England</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJpYDdYvBpjXV6WpybK68C</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Literatur</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4035964-5</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Hof</subfield><subfield code="g">Motiv</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4160400-3</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Macht</subfield><subfield code="g">Motiv</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4168422-9</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Hofdichter</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4806618-7</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">England</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4014770-8</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Mittelenglisch.</subfield><subfield code="2">swd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">To 1700</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Criticism, interpretation, etc.</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Poets and power from Chaucer to Wyatt (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFH7j8v9XkkdctV78hr47b</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Meyer-Lee, Robert John.</subfield><subfield code="t">Poets and power from Chaucer to Wyatt.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge, UK ; Print version record. Introduction: laureates and beggars -- Part I. Backgrounds -- Laureate poetics -- Part II. The First Lancastrian Poets -- John Lydgate: the invention of the English laureate -- Thomas Hoccleve: beggar laureate -- Part III. From Lancaster to Early Tudor -- Lydgateanism -- The trace of Lydgate: Stephen Hawes, Alexander Barclay, and John Skelton -- Epilogue: Sir Thomas Wyatt: anti-laureate. In the early fifteenth century, English poets responded to a changed climate of patronage, instituted by Henry IV and successor monarchs, by inventing a new tradition of public and elite poetry. English.
