Zusammenfassung: | Burgeoning advances in brain science are opening up new perspectives on how we acquire knowledge. Indeed, it is now possible to explore consciousness - the very centre of human concern - by scientific means. In this illuminating book, Dr. Gerald M. Edelman offers a new theory of knowledge based on striking scientific findings about how the brain works. And he addresses the related compelling question: does the latest research imply that all knowledge can be reduced to scientific description? Edelman's brain-based approach to knowledge has rich implications for our understanding of creativity, of the normal and abnormal functioning of the brain, and of the connections among the different ways we have of knowing. While the gulf between science and the humanities and their respective views of the world has seemed enormous in the past, the author shows that their differences can be dissolved by considering their origins in brain functions. He foresees a day when brain-based devices will be conscious, and he reflects on this and other fascinating ideas about how we come to know the world and ourselves. |

He foresees a day when brain-based devices will be conscious, and he reflects on this and other fascinating ideas about how we come to know the world and ourselves.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Brain.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85016319</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Neurosciences.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh91006099</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Brain</subfield><subfield code="x">physiology</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Consciousness</subfield><subfield code="x">physiology</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Brain</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D001921</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Neurosciences</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D009488</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Knowledge</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Cerveau.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Neurosciences.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">brains.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">MEDICAL</subfield><subfield code="x">Neuroscience.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">PSYCHOLOGY</subfield><subfield code="x">Neuropsychology.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Brain</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Neurosciences</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Kennistheorie.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Bewustzijn.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Hersenfuncties.</subfield><subfield code="2">gtt</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Second nature (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGkdMTkyMbkK7xWjgYpQdP</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Edelman, Gerald M.</subfield><subfield code="t">Second nature.</subfield><subfield code="d">New Haven : Yale University Press, ©2006</subfield><subfield code="z">0300120397</subfield><subfield code="z">9780300120394</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2006007376</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)64487021</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=188142</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBL -
