Zusammenfassung: | "Bringing a new perspective to Charlotte's landmark school desegregation efforts, Stephen Samuel Smith provides a history of the nationally-praised mandatory busing plan and the court battle that led to its ultimate demise. Although both black and white children benefited from busing, its most ongoing consequences were not educational, but the political and economic ones that served the interests of Charlotte's business elite and facilitated the city's economic boom. Drawing on urban regime theory, Smith shows how busing enhanced civic capacity and was part of a political alliance between Charlotte's business elite and black political leaders. This account of Charlotte's history has national implications for desegregation, urban education, efforts to build civic capacity, and the political involvement of the urban poor."--Jacket |

new perspective to Charlotte's landmark school desegregation efforts, Stephen Samuel Smith provides a history of the nationally-praised mandatory busing plan and the court battle that led to its ultimate demise. This account of Charlotte's history has national implications for desegregation, urban education, efforts to build civic capacity, and the political involvement of the urban poor."--Jacket</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Busing for school integration</subfield><subfield code="z">North Carolina</subfield><subfield code="z">Charlotte</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Education, Urban</subfield><subfield code="x">Political aspects</subfield><subfield code="z">North Carolina</subfield><subfield code="z">Charlotte.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">School improvement programs</subfield><subfield code="z">North Carolina</subfield><subfield code="z">Charlotte.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Charlotte (N.C.)</subfield><subfield code="x">Politics and government.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Charlotte (N.C.)</subfield><subfield code="x">Economic conditions.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Ramassage scolaire aux fins de déségrégation</subfield><subfield code="z">Caroline du Nord</subfield><subfield code="z">Charlotte</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Enseignement en milieu urbain</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect politique</subfield><subfield code="z">Caroline du Nord</subfield><subfield code="z">Charlotte.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Enseignement</subfield><subfield code="x">Réforme</subfield><subfield code="z">Caroline du Nord</subfield><subfield code="z">Charlotte.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">EDUCATION</subfield><subfield code="x">Educational Policy & Reform</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">EDUCATION</subfield><subfield code="x">Administration</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Busing for school integration</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Economic history</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Education, Urban</subfield><subfield code="x">Political aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Politics and government</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">School improvement programs</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">North Carolina</subfield><subfield code="z">Charlotte</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJg8MfRhXt6dDxXVVFfjG3</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Boom for whom? "Bringing a new perspective to Charlotte's landmark school desegregation efforts, Stephen Samuel Smith provides a history of the nationally-praised mandatory busing plan and the court battle that led to its ultimate demise. This account of Charlotte's history has national implications for desegregation, urban education, efforts to build civic capacity, and the political involvement of the urban poor."--Jacket English.
