Zusammenfassung: | This innovative cultural history examines wide-ranging issues of religion, politics, and identity through an analysis of the American Indian Ghost Dance movement and its significance for two little-studied tribes: the Shoshones and Bannocks. The Ghost Dance has become a metaphor for the death of American Indian culture, but as Gregory Smoak argues, it was not the desperate fantasy of a dying people but a powerful expression of a racialized "Indianness." While the Ghost Dance did appeal to supernatural forces to restore power to native peoples, on another level it became a vehicle for the expression of meaningful social identities that crossed ethnic, tribal, and historical boundaries. Looking closely at the Ghost Dances of 1870 and 1890, Smoak constructs a far-reaching, new argument about the formation of ethnic and racial identity among American Indians. He examines the origins of Shoshone and Bannock ethnicity, follows these peoples through a period of declining autonomy vis-a-vis the United States government, and finally puts their experience and the Ghost Dances within the larger context of identity formation and emerging nationalism which marked United States history in the nineteenth century |

He examines the origins of Shoshone and Bannock ethnicity, follows these peoples through a period of declining autonomy vis-a-vis the United States government, and finally puts their experience and the Ghost Dances within the larger context of identity formation and emerging nationalism which marked United States history in the nineteenth century</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Ghost dance</subfield><subfield code="x">History</subfield><subfield code="y">19th century.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Shoshoni Indians</subfield><subfield code="x">Rites and ceremonies.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Shoshoni Indians</subfield><subfield code="x">Religion.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Shoshoni Indians</subfield><subfield code="x">Ethnic identity.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Bannock Indians</subfield><subfield code="x">Rites and ceremonies.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Bannock Indians</subfield><subfield code="x">Religion.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Bannock Indians</subfield><subfield code="x">Ethnic identity.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Danse des esprits</subfield><subfield code="x">Histoire</subfield><subfield code="y">19e siècle.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Shoshone</subfield><subfield code="x">Rites et cérémonies.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Shoshone</subfield><subfield code="x">Religion.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Shoshone</subfield><subfield code="x">Identité ethnique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Bannock</subfield><subfield code="x">Rites et cérémonies.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Bannock</subfield><subfield code="x">Religion.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Bannock</subfield><subfield code="x">Identité ethnique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">RELIGION</subfield><subfield code="x">Ethnic & Tribal.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">HISTORY</subfield><subfield code="x">Native American.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Ghost dance</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Shoshoni Indians</subfield><subfield code="x">Religion</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Shoshoni Indians</subfield><subfield code="x">Rites and ceremonies</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Bannock</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4477840-5</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Ethnische Identität</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4153096-2</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Shoshone</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4248318-9</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Zeremonie</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield><subfield code="0">http://d-nb.info/gnd/4190741-3</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">USA</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Shoshone.</subfield><subfield code="2">swd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Bannock.</subfield><subfield code="2">swd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">1800 - Print version record. This innovative cultural history examines wide-ranging issues of religion, politics, and identity through an analysis of the American Indian Ghost Dance movement and its significance for two little-studied tribes: the Shoshones and Bannocks. He examines the origins of Shoshone and Bannock ethnicity, follows these peoples through a period of declining autonomy vis-a-vis the United States government, and finally puts their experience and the Ghost Dances within the larger context of identity formation and emerging nationalism which marked United States history in the nineteenth century Ghost dance History 19th century.
