Zusammenfassung: | With this study of Maori and Chamorro, Sandra Chung and William Ladusaw make a valuable contribution to the growing literature on the formal semantic analysis of non-Indo-European languages. Their ultimate focus is on how the study of these Austronesian languages can illuminate the alternatives for semantic interpretation and their interaction with syntactic structure. Revisiting the analysis of indefiniteness in terms of restricted free variables, they claim that some varieties of indefinites are better analyzed by taking restriction and saturation to be fundamental semantic operations. Chapters examine the general topic of modes of composition (including predicate restriction and syntactic versus semantic saturation), types of indefinite determiners in Maori, and object incorporation in Chamorro (including discussions of the extra object and restriction without saturation). The authors' goal is that the two case studies they offer, and their larger focus on modes of composition, will contribute to a broader account of the interaction of form, position, and semantic interpretation. |

The authors' goal is that the two case studies they offer, and their larger focus on modes of composition, will contribute to a broader account of the interaction of form, position, and semantic interpretation.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Semantics.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85119870</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Grammar, Comparative and general</subfield><subfield code="x">Syntax.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85056338</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Sémantique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Syntaxe.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">semantics.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">LANGUAGE ARTS & DISCIPLINES</subfield><subfield code="x">Linguistics</subfield><subfield code="x">Semantics.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Grammar, Comparative and general</subfield><subfield code="x">Syntax</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Semantics</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">LINGUISTICS & LANGUAGE/General</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Ladusaw, William A.,</subfield><subfield code="d">1952-</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCjMfMgkqXrVMtTHbthHtJC</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n79151093</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Restriction and saturation (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGH4rJHbkWw3VHYTqPfP43</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Chung, Sandra.</subfield><subfield code="t">Restriction and saturation.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge, Mass. : MIT Press, ©2004</subfield><subfield code="z">0262033135</subfield><subfield code="z">0262532549</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2003051379</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)52197590</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Linguistic inquiry monographs ;</subfield><subfield code="v">42.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n42015434</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=138645</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Askews and Holts Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">ASKH</subfield><subfield code="n">AH37586292</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">138645</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">2364008</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">3410945</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

With this study of Maori and Chamorro, Sandra Chung and William Ladusaw make a valuable contribution to the growing literature on the formal semantic analysis of non-Indo-European languages.
