Zusammenfassung: | In the late 1970s and early 1980s, when crude oil prices were high, government and private-sector energy experts took a hard look at the costs and benefits of extracting oil from the vast deposits of oil shale that lie beneath the western United States (much of it under government land). Oil prices soon subsided, and interest in the topic waned. With oil prices again spiking and global demand showing no signs of abating, it makes sense to reexamine the costs and benefits of oil shale development. In this report, the authors describe the oil shale resources (estimated at more than triple the proven oil reserves of Saudi Arabia); the suitability, cost, and performance of technologies for developing these resources; and the key energy, environmental, land-use, and socioeconomic policy issues that need to be addressed by government decisionmakers. The authors conclude by outlining both the challenges and opportunities for early action with regard to those policy issues. |

The authors conclude by outlining both the challenges and opportunities for early action with regard to those policy issues.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="505" ind1="0" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Introduction -- The U.S. oil shale resource base -- Oil shale technologies -- The strategic significance of oil shale -- Critical policy issues for oil shale development -- The development path for oil shale -- Appendix: Cost estimation modeling and assumptions.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Oil-shales</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Oil-shale industry</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Schistes bitumineux</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Schistes bitumineux</subfield><subfield code="x">Industrie</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING</subfield><subfield code="x">Mining.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Oil-shale industry</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Oil-shales</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Bartis, James T.,</subfield><subfield code="d">1945-</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCjxWJtCmPFkdpvQcCy7d33</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n00015941</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="710" ind1="2" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Rand Corporation.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n78083407</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Oil shale development in the United States (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCH8wmFpyHbP9c43yCm43pK</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="t">Oil shale development in the United States</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2005022573</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)61261226</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=197646</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Books 24x7</subfield><subfield code="b">B247</subfield><subfield code="n">bkg00016040</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ProQuest Ebook Central</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL784084</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10152618</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">197646</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">2593623</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">2628137</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

"MG-414." Includes bibliographical references (pages 63-68). In the late 1970s and early 1980s, when crude oil prices were high, government and private-sector energy experts took a hard look at the costs and benefits of extracting oil from the vast deposits of oil shale that lie beneath the western United States (much of it under government land).
