Zusammenfassung: | The contributors to this volume view digital libraries (DLs) from a social as well as technological perspective. They see DLs as sociotechnical systems, networks of technology, information artifacts, and people and practices interacting with the larger world of work and society. As Bruce Schatz observes in his foreword, for a digital library to be useful, the users, the documents, and the information system must be in harmony. The contributors begin by asking how we evaluate DLs -- how we can understand them in order to build better DLs -- but they move beyond these basic concerns to explore how DLs make a difference in people's lives and their social worlds, and what studying DLs might tell us about information, knowledge, and social and cognitive processes. The chapters, using both empirical and analytical methods, examine the social impact of DLs and also the web of social and material relations in which DLs are embedded; these far-ranging social worlds include such disparate groups as community activists, environmental researchers, middle-school children, and computer system designers. Topics considered include documents and society; the real boundaries of a "library without walls"; the ecologies of digital libraries; usability and evaluation; information and institutional change; transparency as a product of the convergence of social practices and information artifacts; and collaborative knowledge construction in digital libraries |

Topics considered include documents and society; the real boundaries of a "library without walls"; the ecologies of digital libraries; usability and evaluation; information and institutional change; transparency as a product of the convergence of social practices and information artifacts; and collaborative knowledge construction in digital libraries</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Digital libraries</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Digital libraries</subfield><subfield code="x">Planning.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Information technology</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Bibliothèques virtuelles</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect social.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Bibliothèques virtuelles</subfield><subfield code="x">Planification.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Technologie de l'information</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect social.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">LANGUAGE ARTS & DISCIPLINES</subfield><subfield code="x">Library & Information Science</subfield><subfield code="x">General.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Digital libraries</subfield><subfield code="x">Planning</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Information technology</subfield><subfield code="x">Social aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Digitala bibliotek.</subfield><subfield code="2">sao</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Elektronisk publicering</subfield><subfield code="x">biblioteksmaterial.</subfield><subfield code="2">sao</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">INFORMATION SCIENCE/Library Science</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">INFORMATION SCIENCE/General</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Electronic book.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Bishop, Ann P.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Van House, Nancy A.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Buttenfield, Barbara Pfeil.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Digital library use (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFDxPQvVMxTJWbBTypRmgq</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="t">Digital library use.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge, Mass. : MIT Press, ©2003</subfield><subfield code="z">0262025442</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2002045248</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)51389233</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Digital libraries and electronic publishing.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n99019988</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=138595</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ProQuest Ebook Central</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL3338819</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10225273</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">138595</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">3201005</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">2363567</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |
