Zusammenfassung: | Transcripts of more than seventy-five oral history interviews in which the interviewees assess their MIT experience and reflect on the role of blacks at MIT and beyond. This book grew out of the Blacks at MIT History Project, whose mission is to document the black presence at MIT. The main body of the text consists of transcripts of more than seventy-five oral history interviews, in which the interviewees assess their MIT experience and reflect on the role of blacks at MIT and beyond. Although most of the interviewees are present or former students, black faculty, administrators, and staff are also represented, as are nonblack faculty and administrators who have had an impact on blacks at MIT. The interviewees were selected with an eye to presenting the broadest range of issues and personalities, as well as a representative cross section by time period and category. Each interviewee was asked to discuss family background; education; role models and mentors; experiences of racism and race-related issues; choice of field and career; goals; adjustment to the MIT environment; best and worst MIT experiences; experience with MIT support services; relationships with MIT students, faculty, and staff; advice to present or potential MIT students; and advice to the MIT administration. A recurrent theme is that MIT's rigorous teaching instills the confidence to deal with just about any hurdle in professional life, and that an MIT degree opens many doors and supplies instant credibility. Each interview includes biographical notes and pictures. The book also includes a general introduction, a glossary, and appendixes describing the project's methodology. |

Although most of the interviewees are present or former students, black faculty, administrators, and staff are also represented, as are nonblack faculty and administrators who have had an impact on blacks at MIT. The interviewees were selected with an eye to presenting the broadest range of issues and personalities, as well as a representative cross section by time period and category. Each interviewee was asked to discuss family background; education; role models and mentors; experiences of racism and race-related issues; choice of field and career; goals; adjustment to the MIT environment; best and worst MIT experiences; experience with MIT support services; relationships with MIT students, faculty, and staff; advice to present or potential MIT students; and advice to the MIT administration. A recurrent theme is that MIT's rigorous teaching instills the confidence to deal with just about any hurdle in professional life, and that an MIT degree opens many doors and supplies instant credibility. Each interview includes biographical notes and pictures. The book also includes a general introduction, a glossary, and appendixes describing the project's methodology.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</subfield><subfield code="x">History.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</subfield><subfield code="x">Students</subfield><subfield code="v">Interviews.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</subfield><subfield code="x">Faculty</subfield><subfield code="v">Interviews.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="610" ind1="2" ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Massachusetts Institute of Technology</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">African American college students</subfield><subfield code="z">Massachusetts</subfield><subfield code="z">Cambridge</subfield><subfield code="v">Interviews.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">African American college teachers</subfield><subfield code="z">Massachusetts</subfield><subfield code="z">Cambridge</subfield><subfield code="v">Interviews.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Étudiants noirs américains</subfield><subfield code="z">Massachusetts</subfield><subfield code="z">Cambridge</subfield><subfield code="v">Entretiens.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Professeurs noirs américains (Enseignement supérieur)</subfield><subfield code="z">Massachusetts</subfield><subfield code="z">Cambridge</subfield><subfield code="v">Entretiens.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">EDUCATION</subfield><subfield code="x">Higher.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">African American college students</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">African American college teachers</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Students</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Universities and colleges</subfield><subfield code="x">Faculty</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Massachusetts</subfield><subfield code="z">Cambridge</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">HUMANITIES/History</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">MIT</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Interview</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D017203</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">oral histories (literary works)</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">interviews.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">History</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Interviews</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Oral histories</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Oral histories.</subfield><subfield code="2">lcgft</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms/gf2011026431</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Interviews.</subfield><subfield code="2">lcgft</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/genreForms/gf2014026115</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Histoires orales.</subfield><subfield code="2">rvmgf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Interviews.</subfield><subfield code="2">rvmgf</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Technology and the dream (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFVGqgRd3MvhYmtrBvhBrq</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Williams, Clarence G.</subfield><subfield code="t">Technology and the dream.</subfield><subfield code="b">1st MIT Press pbk. ed.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge, Mass. ;
