Zusammenfassung: | In this book, the author presents a pioneering interpretation of culture as constituting a dynamic relationship between the visible "crust" and the elusive "core" of social life. He meticulously maps the role of the unconscious in shaping much of American life in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He crosses and transcends disciplinary boundaries in studies of September 11, 2001, the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, the execution of Timothy McVeigh, the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, the 1999 Worcester, Massachusetts fire, and the eruption of hypernationalism and xenophobia in nations and workplaces - all as cultural phenomena with a psychodynamic core. He shows how the experience of loss in the face of massive social change often leads to equally massive defence against the experience of mourning. Beneath the Crust of Culture will be of interest not only for behavioural and social science professionals, but also for a lay public interested in understandings of culture deeper than the surface of the news and of official pronouncements |

Beneath the Crust of Culture will be of interest not only for behavioural and social science professionals, but also for a lay public interested in understandings of culture deeper than the surface of the news and of official pronouncements</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Ethnopsychology</subfield><subfield code="z">United States.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="x">Civilization</subfield><subfield code="y">1970-</subfield><subfield code="x">Psychological aspects.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Ethnology.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85045198</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Psychoanalysis.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85108411</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Social psychology.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85123994</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Subconsciousness.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85129414</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Anthropology, Cultural</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="1" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Ethnopsychology</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Psychoanalytic Theory</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Psychology, Social</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Unconscious, Psychology</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1="2" ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Violence</subfield><subfield code="x">psychology</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Ethnopsychologie</subfield><subfield code="z">États-Unis.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">États-Unis</subfield><subfield code="x">Civilisation</subfield><subfield code="y">1970-</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect psychologique.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Ethnologie.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Psychanalyse.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Psychologie sociale.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Inconscient.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">psychoanalysis.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">social psychology.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">unconscious.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">PSYCHOLOGY</subfield><subfield code="x">Ethnopsychology.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Subconsciousness</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Social psychology</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Psychoanalysis</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Ethnology</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Civilization</subfield><subfield code="x">Psychological aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Ethnopsychology</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">United States</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJtxgQXMWqmjMjjwXRHgrq</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="648" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Since 1970</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Stein, Howard F.</subfield><subfield code="t">Beneath the crust of culture.</subfield><subfield code="d">Amsterdam ; In this book, the author presents a pioneering interpretation of culture as constituting a dynamic relationship between the visible "crust" and the elusive "core" of social life. Beneath the Crust of Culture will be of interest not only for behavioural and social science professionals, but also for a lay public interested in understandings of culture deeper than the surface of the news and of official pronouncements English.
