520 | 8 | |a Annotation. |b Disciplinary psychology has failed to achieve a coherent conception of human agency. Instead, it oscillates between two differing conceptions of agency that are equally untenable: a scientistic, reductive approach to choice and action, and an instrumental approach that celebrates a romantic notion of free will. This book examines theoretical, philosophical psychology and argues for a historically and socioculturally situated human capacity for choosing and acting in ways not entirely determined by culture and/or biology. The authors present a detailed developmental theory of how agentic capability emerges from the pre-reflective activity of humans in a real physical and social world. | |

The authors present a detailed developmental theory of how agentic capability emerges from the pre-reflective activity of humans in a real physical and social world.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Autonomy (Psychology)</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85010458</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">PSYCHOLOGY</subfield><subfield code="x">Personality.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Autonomy (Psychology)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Sugarman, Jeff,</subfield><subfield code="d">1955-</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n98046942</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Thompson, Janice,</subfield><subfield code="d">1964-</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n2002062688</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Psychology and the question of agency (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGkMtqWP8qxCf3BYCBJfYP</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Martin, Jack, 1950-</subfield><subfield code="t">Psychology and the question of agency.</subfield><subfield code="d">Albany : State University of New York Press, ©2003</subfield><subfield code="z">0791457265</subfield><subfield code="z">0791457257</subfield><subfield code="w">(DLC) 2002075854</subfield><subfield code="w">(OCoLC)50149716</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="830" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">SUNY series, alternatives in psychology.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n91038370</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="856" ind1="4" ind2="0"><subfield code="l">FWS01</subfield><subfield code="p">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield><subfield code="q">FWS_PDA_EBA</subfield><subfield code="u">https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=114626</subfield><subfield code="3">Volltext</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ProQuest Ebook Central</subfield><subfield code="b">EBLB</subfield><subfield code="n">EBL3408406</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ebrary</subfield><subfield code="b">EBRY</subfield><subfield code="n">ebr10594733</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">EBSCOhost</subfield><subfield code="b">EBSC</subfield><subfield code="n">114626</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Internet Archive</subfield><subfield code="b">INAR</subfield><subfield code="n">psychologyquesti0000mart</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Project MUSE</subfield><subfield code="b">MUSE</subfield><subfield code="n">muse6008</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">9635570</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="938" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">YBP Library Services</subfield><subfield code="b">YANK</subfield><subfield code="n">2351092</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="994" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">92</subfield><subfield code="b">GEBAY</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="912" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">ZDB-4-EBA</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="049" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">DE-863</subfield></datafield></record></collection> |

Annotation. Disciplinary psychology has failed to achieve a coherent conception of human agency.
