Zusammenfassung: | Scholars have long studied how institutions emerge and become stable. But why do institutions sometimes break down? In this book, Michael L. Ross explores the breakdown of the institutions that govern natural resource exports in developing states. He shows that these institutions often break down when states receive positive trade shocks - unanticipated windfalls. Drawing on the theory of rent-seeking, he suggests that these institutions succumb to a problem he calls 'rent-seizing' - the predatory behavior of politicians who seek to supply rent to others, and who purposefully dismantle institutions that restrain them. Using case studies of timber booms in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, he shows how windfalls tend to trigger rent-seizing activities that may have disastrous consequences for state institutions, and for the government of natural resources. More generally, he shows how institutions can collapse when they have become endogenous to any rent-seeking process. |

He shows that these institutions often break down when states receive positive trade shocks - unanticipated windfalls. Drawing on the theory of rent-seeking, he suggests that these institutions succumb to a problem he calls 'rent-seizing' - the predatory behavior of politicians who seek to supply rent to others, and who purposefully dismantle institutions that restrain them. Using case studies of timber booms in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, he shows how windfalls tend to trigger rent-seizing activities that may have disastrous consequences for state institutions, and for the government of natural resources. More generally, he shows how institutions can collapse when they have become endogenous to any rent-seeking process.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Forest management</subfield><subfield code="x">Environmental aspects</subfield><subfield code="z">Southeast Asia.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Forest policy</subfield><subfield code="x">Environmental aspects</subfield><subfield code="z">Southeast Asia.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Logging</subfield><subfield code="x">Economic aspects</subfield><subfield code="z">Southeast Asia.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Timber</subfield><subfield code="x">Economic aspects</subfield><subfield code="z">Southeast Asia.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Rent (Economic theory)</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85112872</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Forêts</subfield><subfield code="x">Gestion</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect de l'environnement</subfield><subfield code="z">Asie du Sud-Est.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Politique forestière</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect de l'environnement</subfield><subfield code="z">Asie du Sud-Est.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Forêts</subfield><subfield code="x">Exploitation</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect économique</subfield><subfield code="z">Asie du Sud-Est.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Bois d'uvre</subfield><subfield code="x">Aspect économique</subfield><subfield code="z">Asie du Sud-Est.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Rente (Théorie économique)</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">economic rent.</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">NATURE</subfield><subfield code="x">Natural Resources.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Environmental Economics.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">BUSINESS & ECONOMICS</subfield><subfield code="x">Green Business.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Forest management</subfield><subfield code="x">Environmental aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Forest policy</subfield><subfield code="x">Environmental aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Logging</subfield><subfield code="x">Economic aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Rent (Economic theory)</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Timber</subfield><subfield code="x">Economic aspects</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Southeast Asia</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="4"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Timber booms and institutional breakdown in southeast Asia (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGkMqV9Pt4cDyWDMmdqKbb</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Ross, Michael Lewin, 1961-</subfield><subfield code="t">Timber booms and institutional breakdown in southeast Asia.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge, UK ;
