Zusammenfassung: | "Adam Smith's The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759) presents an original idea of a general system of morals, and is a text of central importance in the history of moral and political thought. It presents a theory of the imagination which Smith derived from David Hume but which encompasses an idea of sympathy that in some ways is more sophisticated than anything in Hume's philosophy. By means of sympathy and the mental construct of an impartial spectator, Smith formulated highly original theories of conscience, moral judgement and the virtues. The enduring legacy of his work is its reconstruction of the Enlightenment idea of a moral, or social, science encompassing both political economy and the theory of law and government. This volume offers a new edition of the text with clear and helpful notes for the student reader, together with a substantial introduction that sets the work in its philosophical and historical context."--Jacket |

Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759) presents an original idea of a general system of morals, and is a text of central importance in the history of moral and political thought. This volume offers a new edition of the text with clear and helpful notes for the student reader, together with a substantial introduction that sets the work in its philosophical and historical context."--Jacket</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Ethics</subfield><subfield code="v">Early works to 1800.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Ethics.</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85045096</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="2"><subfield code="a">Ethics</subfield><subfield code="0">https://id.nlm.nih.gov/mesh/D004989</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Morale.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Morale</subfield><subfield code="v">Ouvrages avant 1800.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">ethics (philosophy)</subfield><subfield code="2">aat</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">PHILOSOPHY</subfield><subfield code="x">Ethics & Moral Philosophy.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Ethics</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Ethik</subfield><subfield code="2">gnd</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Morals</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="653" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Overseas item</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Electronic books.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="655" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Early works</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="700" ind1="1" ind2=" "><subfield code="a">Haakonssen, Knud,</subfield><subfield code="d">1947-</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJrKYrQ4QDGDRrcDPHrpfq</subfield><subfield code="0">http://id.loc.gov/authorities/names/n81121335</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">The theory of moral sentiments (Work)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCFTftWPXYwdTgTxFFVcqw3</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Smith, Adam, 1723-1790.</subfield><subfield code="t">Theory of moral sentiments.</subfield><subfield code="d">Cambridge, U.K. ; Of the propriety of action -- Of merit and demerit; or, of the objects of reward and punishment -- Of the foundation of our judgments concerning our own sentiments and conduct, and of the sense of duty -- Of the effect of utility upon the sentiment of approbation -- Of the influence of custom and fashion upon the sentiments of moral approbation and disapprobation -- Of the character of virtue -- Of systems of moral philosophy. "Adam Smith's The Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759) presents an original idea of a general system of morals, and is a text of central importance in the history of moral and political thought. This volume offers a new edition of the text with clear and helpful notes for the student reader, together with a substantial introduction that sets the work in its philosophical and historical context."--Jacket Ethics Early works to 1800.
