Zusammenfassung: | "In Federal Britain, John Kendle explores and analyses the British engagement with the federal idea from the early 1600s to the present day. The United Kingdom is faced with two major federal constitutional debates. The first is about the nations which comprise the British state and, hence, the division of power between Westminster and regional parliaments. The second surrounds the United Kingdom and the European Union. John Kendle sets these contemporary discussions in context in this book and provides valuable insights into their origins." "John Kendle argues that the federal idea has been a consistent feature for constitutional debate in the British Isles since the union of the crowns. In Federal Britain he examines the break-up of the first British empire and the development of modern federalism. As well as discussing the Anglo-Irish relationship and the United Kingdom's relationship to Europe, the author focuses on other contemporary issues such as the world order, imperial federation and decolonization. He considers the possibility of a rearrangement of constitutional relations within the United Kingdom." "Federal Britain outlines arguments for and against the adoption of the federal idea as a solution to either domestic or world problems. It is a timely addition to British constitutional thought and a thorough survey which will appeal to all historians and political scientists concerned with what offers the best potential government for a state."--Jacket |

The United Kingdom is faced with two major federal constitutional debates. The first is about the nations which comprise the British state and, hence, the division of power between Westminster and regional parliaments. The second surrounds the United Kingdom and the European Union. John Kendle sets these contemporary discussions in context in this book and provides valuable insights into their origins." "John Kendle argues that the federal idea has been a consistent feature for constitutional debate in the British Isles since the union of the crowns. In Federal Britain he examines the break-up of the first British empire and the development of modern federalism. As well as discussing the Anglo-Irish relationship and the United Kingdom's relationship to Europe, the author focuses on other contemporary issues such as the world order, imperial federation and decolonization. He considers the possibility of a rearrangement of constitutional relations within the United Kingdom." "Federal Britain outlines arguments for and against the adoption of the federal idea as a solution to either domestic or world problems. It is a timely addition to British constitutional thought and a thorough survey which will appeal to all historians and political scientists concerned with what offers the best potential government for a state."--Jacket</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="505" ind1="0" ind2="0"><subfield code="g">Machine generated contents note:</subfield><subfield code="g">1.</subfield><subfield code="t">Indivisible sovereignty --</subfield><subfield code="g">2.</subfield><subfield code="t">Nineteenth-century practice and theory --</subfield><subfield code="g">3.</subfield><subfield code="t">'Federation' of the empire --</subfield><subfield code="g">4.</subfield><subfield code="t">'Federation' of the United Kingdom --</subfield><subfield code="g">5.</subfield><subfield code="t">Round Table movement, the empire and world order --</subfield><subfield code="g">6.</subfield><subfield code="t">Federal Union --</subfield><subfield code="g">7.</subfield><subfield code="t">Federalism and decolonization --</subfield><subfield code="g">8.</subfield><subfield code="t">'The federal solution is not possible for us' --</subfield><subfield code="g">9.</subfield><subfield code="t">Conclusion.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="546" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="a">English.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Federal government</subfield><subfield code="z">Great Britain.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">Central-local government relations</subfield><subfield code="z">Great Britain.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="0"><subfield code="a">European Union</subfield><subfield code="z">Great Britain.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="6"><subfield code="a">Relations gouvernement central-collectivités locales</subfield><subfield code="z">Grande-Bretagne.</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Government</subfield><subfield code="x">Local.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">POLITICAL SCIENCE</subfield><subfield code="x">Government</subfield><subfield code="x">State & Provincial.</subfield><subfield code="2">bisacsh</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Central-local government relations</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="650" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Federal government</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="651" ind1=" " ind2="7"><subfield code="a">Great Britain</subfield><subfield code="2">fast</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PBJdmp7p3cx8hpmJ8HvmTpP</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="758" ind1=" " ind2=" "><subfield code="i">has work:</subfield><subfield code="a">Federal Britain (Text)</subfield><subfield code="1">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCGB3rrcmVfwHvjmVJ4c7H3</subfield><subfield code="4">https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork</subfield></datafield><datafield tag="776" ind1="0" ind2="8"><subfield code="i">Print version:</subfield><subfield code="a">Kendle, John, 1937-</subfield><subfield code="t">Federal Britain.</subfield><subfield code="d">London ;
